		I think the rings being Goa'uld technology they be darn near as simple as possible and much more showy than actually necessary, so all the rings and the loud noises and so forth are really fundamentally unnecessary.
		THe rings could also have a "firing arc." The matter stream can be "fired" within a cone of X degrees, allowing the transporter greater flexibility, and negating the need to be in EXACTLY the right place for the rings to function.

		I ws thinking you were saying that there is no need at all for the targets of ring transport to be in any kind of ring transporter to be transported, which is clearly not the case.
		I agree that the rings on the tel'tac, external and internal, may be the same set, but you still need to get your target in a set of rings for transport to work.
		The transporter rings nee donly have an appropriately selected platfor in order to transport and this is selected by the operator from what might be a frequency selector on a Goa'uld transmitter.

		Obviously to put the floor piece in the ring transporter effect it would add a couple thousand dollars; per effect, which can be better put to other areas.

		OK - I tried with the rings as 'func_door' entities (set to crusher - you don't want the bottom one going back up again when the player gets in the way while the others are still coming down!) and it just wouldn't turn out right.
		here are 2 videos of the rings comming from the ground, this might be easyer to do if we can make it like this, at first lets get the rings working then we will worry about the transporter.

		There is a tube of light coming from the ceiling in sg_stargate, you can see it in the room with the gate when the rings are activated.
		As for the two way thing, the rings are one-way in the series and there's no physical evidence to prove otherwise.
