The chestnut 'Was Ringo a good drummer?' is, nonetheless, sufficiently in contention for it to still be frequently and hotly argued amongst anyone who has an interest in The Beatles' music, and Ringo is frequently the butt of jokes.

Ringo (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ringo is the third solo album by Ringo Starr, released in 1973.
Generally considered to be Starr's best album - and undisputed as his most famous - Ringo is notable for its slew of guest stars, including his fellow ex-Beatles, something which would become a trademark for Starr on many of his future albums.
Ringo was remastered and reissued on CD in 1991 with three bonus tracks: Starr's debut 1971 single "It Don't Come Easy" and its B-Side "Early 1970", as well as "Photograph"'s flip side "Down And Out".

Ringo was assisted in his journey by several (other) famous persons, and the album sold well enough to peak at #20 on the charts.
All four ex-Beatles were planning to work on the album, but John and George had projects that they were wrestling with at the time, so the decision was made to put off their work on Ringo's album (for the most part) until 1981.
The album contents were shuffled somewhat from what was originally intended, and by this time, Ringo had a brand new wife, Barbara Bach, with whom he fell in love on the set of their film, Caveman, the previous year.

Ringo Starr, of course, was one of The Beatles.
Ringo's biggest solo success was 1973's "Ringo" (with appearances by Lennon, McCartney and Harrison), which went Gold and multi-platinum (one million albums sold), propelled by the three Top 10 singles from it ("Photograph," "You're Sixteen" and "My Oh My"; more recent reissues on CD have included "It Don't Come Easy" as a bonus track).
Ringo dominated the show, but yielded the spotlight to each artist for a couple of songs while he sat behind his drum kit --- a Ringo concert is the most family-oriented show, next to a Monkees reunion, on the road and a fun experience ("I saw a Beatle!!!").

In retrospect "Ringo's Rotogravure", released in 1976 was not a bad album though the release of "Ringo the Fourth" in 1977 began a downward trend fuelled by the excesses of his lifestyle.
By the late 80's Ringo had cleaned up his lifestyle and put together an all star revue called the "All Starr Band" mixing old beatle and solo favourites together with notable songs from other artists in the band.

The idea, back in 1980, was to resurrect Ringo Starr's recording career by the same method that it had been launched with the Ringo album in 1973 -- by having his fellow Beatles and other well-known friends help out.
His Ringo song languished (his own version would be released in 1984), while Harrison took his tune back and rewrote the lyrics for what became his own hit, "All Those Years Ago." Then Ringo's label, Portrait, lacked enthusiasm for the album, and he moved on to Boardwalk.
Long out of print, Stop and Smell the Roses reappeared on Capitol's The Right Stuff reissue label on September 6, 1994, with six bonus tracks, reflecting the changes made in the album from its original, unreleased version, that increased the album's length by nearly 70 percent and demonstrated that the later song selection was better.
