  Ringo Lam
HK New Wave directors such as Lam were less concerned with showing glamorized Manchu-era heroics as shown in the kung-fu films of the '70's as with showing the gritty reality of modern Hong Kong.
Lam's tight schedule (Lam made the movie -- from scripting to final edit -- in about three weeks) saw Lam having several temper tantrums and outbursts, as well as imposing tight restrictions on the cast and crew.
The film broke somewhat with Lam's more traditional style, concentrating more on pyrotechnics and stylized bloodshed than relationships (one memorable sequence has a gunfight shown from the bullet's point of view) and seems to have given Lam a "clean slate" with Hong Kong audiences, as well as gaining a large international cult fanbase.

Chinese Movie Review | Victim (1999) Ringo Lam, Tony Leung Ka Fai
The film is very much an exercise in suspense, and Lam throws in a fair bit of narrative trickery in his attempts to stay one step ahead of the viewer, and generally succeeds, although some of the plot elements seem to be thrown together a little haphazardly.
Lam uses the horror elements of "Victim" chiefly to generate atmosphere, particularly through some locations which would be clichéd in their original genre, but which give a thriller such as this a different slant.
Although the pace of the film is slow, Lam does throw in a fair bit of violence, though this is generally in the form of torture and isolated acts of brutality rather than the shootouts which fans may expect.

Speaking from a westerners point of view, one of the attractions of Ringo Lams films is that his characters don't have the giddy silliness and don't become involved in petulent adolecent confrontations that are so specifically common in most other Hong Kong productions and all action films in general.
