  ABC News: Ring Around Vienna
On the Ringstrasse is the huge City Park, honoring many great Viennese musicians and composers with statues.
Nearby are the ivy-covered walls and round Romanesque arches of St. Ruprecht's, the oldest church in Vienna, built in the 11th century on a chunk of Roman ruins.
It was built at the command of a nervous Franz Josef, who found himself on the throne as an 18-year-old in 1848 — the same year that people's revolts against autocracy were sweeping across Europe.

Though the Ringstrasse was a construction of grand scale, reminicent of the Baroque style, the actuality of the construction was quite different.
Furthermore, the buildings constructed along the Ringstrasse were not organized towards each other, but towards the street itself, further focusing the attention on the Ringstrasse.
The trees lining the Ringstrasse, which can also be seen above, seperate the street from the surrounding city, further shifting the Ringstrasse from being just a road connecting the newly constructed buildings to being the main construction itself.

The reason for requesting research about this specific architect, was a matter "of life and death" for an important Ringstrasse palais on Kärntnerring whose owner, Anglo-Elementar Insurance, wanted to raze it to the ground and replace it with a modern office building.
The task was unusual because Baumgartner was by no means an important architect, but nevertheless an early, and therefore pioneering figure within the life of the Ringstrasse period.
Besides exploring his life and work, I felt compelled to first understand the motivations of this new architectural movement, which even as late as in the 1960's was considered just a weak and unoriginal copycat compendium of historical styles.

The Ringstrasse was built in the place of the medieval walls that used to surround the center of Vienna, today the First District.
On Christmas Eve 1857, the Emperor Franz Josef I announced the demolition of the original walls, in order to build an imperial boulevard as an expression of the glorious Habsburg Empire.
Today, Vienna's Ringstrasse looks pretty much as it did in the last days of the Habsburgs, studded with key landmarks: 12 major public buildings (among them two museums), the State Opera House, the New Town Hall, the Stock Exchange, the university, the Burgtheater and the Parliament.

The Ring, conceived from the start as the via triumphalis of the Habsburg dynasty, gained all-important social cachet from the presence there of many mansions built by the Archdukes Wilhelm and Ludwig Viktor, as well as by such old aristocratic families as the Württembergs, Hoyos, and Kinskys.
The distinguished Aristocrats' Casino also took a position on the Ringstrasse.
Aesthetically, the Ring gave rise to a distinctive style and achieved it at the highest possible level of quality.

Club culture under Vienna's Ringstrasse: the Passage
Sometimes town planners' mistakes of bygone eras can prove to be a blessing in disguise.
The Babenberger Passage under Vienna's Ringstrasse boulevard was originally designed as a pedestrian underpass linking the Hofburg Palace and the Kunsthistorisches Museum so as to prevent overground vehicle traffic from being held up.
This idea has long since been consigned to history, and the Babenberger Passage was unused for many years until it was given a new lease on life as a thriving club.
