Anyway, back to the real, not-even-made-up story: "Rinzai went to Huang-po and asked the standard question, 'What is the meaning of Bodhidkarma coming from the West?' Huang-po knocked him to the ground with his stick.
As the story goes, Rinzai returns to his monastery and reports this multiple shit kicking to the head of his monastery, who tells him, and I quote: " 'How compassionate Huang-po is. He was just trying to relieve you of distress.' Hearing this, Rinzai suddenly had a deep awakening of his original nature.
So, anyway, Rinzai goes back to Huang-po and says: "It is because of your kindness that I returned so quickly." Then Rinzai tells Huang-po how he had knocked the snot out of his old teacher just for laughs.
