The Rio Minho begins in Spanish Galicia and for a distance of seventy-four kilometers forms the northern Portuguese frontier with Spain.
The Rio Douro is navigable by small craft for its full distance of 198 kilometers in Portugal; historically the river was used to transport casks of port wine to Porto.

Speaking to JIS News on the effects of the extraction of sand and gravel from the river, Dr. Mitchell says a model of the Rio Minho system has been made examining the geology, land use, mining activities, river flow (gradient) and rainfall, all of which control the amount of sediment in the river.
The SEBRA Project has so far revealed that if mining were increased in the Rio Minho, the resource would be adversely affected as, due to the re-vegetation of hillsides, the volume of sediments is not being transported into the rivers as it was former years.
According to Commissioner of the Mines and Geology Division, Coy Roache, the aim is to prevent depletion of Rio Minho and Yallahs reaching the level of the Rio Cobre and Hope River.

The Trees for Tomorrow project has received $31 million to develop Forest Land Use Database for the Rio Minho in Clarendon, Dolphin Head Reserve in Westmoreland and Hanover and Martha Brae Watershed in Trelawny.

Following closely on the heels of the Kingston Metropolitan Area hazard mapping project, a further landslide hazard study is being undertaken by the University of the West Indies (UWI) in collaboration with the British Geological Survey (BGS) for the Rio Minho watershed area in central Jamaica.
Using assessment techniques developed in landslide-prone areas as far afield as Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Slovakia, the Rio Minho project is scheduled for completion by the end of 1999.
