Okay, the Diamond Rio PMP300 doesn't really have anything to do with gaming, but it is a cool peripheral for the hot mp3 technology that everyone loves.
The Diamond Rio (not to be confused with the country group is a portable mp3 player that allows you to download the tunes from your computer to listen to anywhere you choose.

Rio PMP300 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rio PMP300 was the second portable consumer MP3 digital audio player (portable digital audio player), and was produced by Diamond Multimedia.
Connection to a personal computer was through the computer's parallel port, with a proprietary connector on the Rio's edge.
Consequently owners wanting to keep their Rio working use independently produced freeware programs such as "Dreaming of Brazil" to upload audio files to the player.

Getting back to the Rio's spec sheet, readers can see that the signal to noise ratio (95dB) and the overall distortion rate (.01 -.1%) are fairly competitive versus other portable audio format players.
The overall battery consumption rate of the Rio is impressive, with a stock alkaline AA battery turning in 10hrs on our continuous music playback tests.
One portion of the Rio's spec sheet that didn't jibe with our real world experience was the "10 seconds per 1MB" rating for transferring MP3 songs from your computer to the Rio via a parallel pass through cable.

People familiar with the introduction of the Sony walkman series of portable audio players in the early 80s remember back fondly to what were essentially players that were marketed not on their audio quality merits, but on their ability to fit the buyers lifestyle.
The Diamond Rio PMP300 should also be looked at in the light that it provides a nice ability to provide music to anyone under any situation (even jogging where the Rio's non-skipping qualities stand out over other portable audio formats).
We suspect that most purchasers of the Rio PMP300 won't be too concerned with its audio clarity however, as the unit is well suited to environments where sound definition isn't as important.

Diamond multimedia's Rio PMP300 MP3player - Diamond Multimedia Systems, Inc Emedia Professional - Find Articles
Downloading up to 37 minutes of MP3s from your PC to the Rio's flash memory card is about as difficult as printing a Word document, given the excellent management software and easy plug-and-play parallel port connection, and playback quality is as good as the MP3 source files allow.
Given the RIAA's current pending case against the Rio as a potential copyright cheat [trial date: early 2000), here's hoping Diamond Multimedia is allotted the space to continue to innovate and improve, as they've so spectacularly done with their Rio.
The Rio proper is so, so small, and neat, it hardly seems the sort of thing that should have an existence fraught with peril and damnation as it does, given the RIAA's steadfast opposition to the product as an enabling copyright cheat.

The reason behind the furore is the fact that the Rio plays MP3, a music compression format that over the past few years has taken the Internet by storm.
The Rio is both lighter and smaller than most MD players, however, and has the additional advantage of containing no moving parts.
Even after changing over to a better pair, the MP3 files stored on the Rio sounded merely average when compared to CD or MD. It was several years before audiophiles warmed to the ATRAC encoding of MD, so MP3 is unlikely to gain acceptance quickly.
