I would personally recomend in RIO to stay at the Le Meridian which has some good deals, Sheraton is overpriced, and in a remote location in Leblon.
I stay there every time I go to Rio for business and whereas one should always take care (ie use common security sense) when walking in public areas in Brazil the "standard" crime advisories are generally overstating the risk.
Rio is more of a pick pocket's and jewellery thief's haven where after a good scare with a knife renders you a little poorer, but in Sao Paulo its shoot first and take the wallet afterwards.
