The first part of the trail, between Riomaggiore and Manarola, was extremely pleasant — a nicely paved path, little cafes along the way, elderly folks walking along on a guided tour.
We were far up the steep main road, but the view of the rooftops, water, and mountains from the rooftop was breathtaking.
Riomaggiore seemed to be the place where most of the rentals are located, and was very touristy, but was also close to the beach, and right at the end of the hiking trail.

I have reserved train seats from Milan to La Spezia but have not bought tickets to get from La Spezia to Riomaggiore which is where are staying.
Riomaggiore is the first stop from La Spezia.
La Spezia to Riomaggiore is 7 km (according to the Thomas Cook timetable).

It is possible that when the train stops in Riomaggiore you will find yourself inside a tunnel (which will make it difficult to see the signs for the station).

Riomaggiore is smaller than Monterosso - but theres not a lot of wild night life in CT anyways so its all relative.
But because it was out of the main line, it was also a schlep to get anywhere, given that the only two directions in Riomaggiore are "up" and "down".
His first words out of his mouth when I checked in were not "Buona sera" or "Benvenuto all'Albergo ________", but rather "Passports!" When I slipped on the algae-covered Riomaggiore boat ramp and sprained my elbow, he was less than helpful when I asked for a bag of ice to control the swelling.
