Fine Tool Journal Fall 1997--"What's in a Name?"
Rip saws with 3 1/2 to 5 ppi were used mostly on rough unseasoned lumber.
By far the most common rip saw sold was cut with 5 1/2 ppi, a pitch that was well suited for general work in both dry and seasoned lumber that was rough or planed.
The term back saw refers to any saw which has a blade which is much thinner than a hand or rip saw and has been stiffened by a folded piece of metal which is crimped on the upper portion of the blade.

Yield Improvement in Manual Ripsaw Operations
An alternative to ripping random width parts would be to have a range of multiple widths being cut from the same length stock.
In sawing random width parts at the ripsaw, an effort should be made to avoid the generation of narrow, random width strips.
In the properly ripped board (Figure 2b), 67.7% of the board is converted to useful parts, while in the poorly ripped board (Figure 2c) only a 54.2% yield results.

Welcome to Vintage Saw's Saw Filing Treatise   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Rip teeth are not as common on back saws that you see available for sale, but in certain applications, such as cutting tenon cheeks or dovetailing, they are invaluable.
Since rip teeth are large and easy to file, I recommend that unless you are experienced, you start with a rake closer to 8 degrees, and gradually reduce it until you find the best compromise between ease of cut and speed of cut.
On a rip saw, the effect is less important, but by maintaining the same approach, and only filing every other tooth, the front of each tooth will get the same treatment as in a cross cut saw.

Disston 1942 Saw Manual on Rip Saws
Disston Rip Saws 5 1/2 points to the inch and coarser are made with finer teeth at the point of the blade to make it easier to start the cut.
Ripping usually is done with the work supported on saw horses, but if the board must be held in a vise, place it to give the proper cutting angle.
Disston Rip Saws are made 5, 5 1/2, and 6 points to the inch in 26-inch lengths and 7 points in 22 and 24-inch lengths in some patterns.

Since dovetailing is a ripping operation, where the kerf is running with the grain, our Dovetail Saw has its teeth filed to a rip profile, unlike other dovetail saws on the market today.

 Hand Saw Basics
They get their name because of their function - a crosscut saw is for cutting wood across (or perpendicular to) the grain, and rip saws are filed to cut more efficiently with (or parallel to) the grain of the wood.
The rip saw is often compared to a series of chisels that each hack away at the wood as it passes over it.
The saws are also usually crosscut saws, but a rip saw may be a better fit for the cheek cuts for a tenon.

Saw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A saw is a tool for cutting wood or other material, consisting of a serrated blade (a blade with the cutting edge dentated or toothed) and worked either by hand or by steam, water, electric or other power.
A Hand saw uses either simply a blade thick enough to be stiff, or cuts on the pull stoke which reduces the stiffness requirement.
Diamond saws are made by combining powder metal with diamond crystals, which are then heated and pressed into a molding to form the diamond segments.

 Straight-Line Rip Saw Operation
Ripping rough lumber could be dangerous because of the varying thickness of the boards- a thin one may kick back especially if it has stress in it.
I can't rip finish planed or sanded lumber on my Mattison 202 because it leaves dents and a small amount of oil from the chain on the surface, so a regular tablesaw is still used a lot.
Typically, we preset the fence to the desired width, rip one straight edge, using the laser to identify the best location on the board, and send the board back to the operator, who then rips it while it rides against the fence for an accurate blank with two parallel edges.
