Ripley is a village in Surrey, which grew on the main A3 road from London to Portsmouth.
Ripley is mentioned in H G Wells' novel The war of the worlds.
In the 1870s cycling also became a popular activity in the South of England and Ripley was a convenient distance from London so that many cyclists would stop there for a break at the Anchor Inn.

The first record located of Henry is the 1841 census of Ripley in Surrey where he is listed as living with Stephen Green (a boot and shoe maker) and his family; the census also records Henry as being a boot and shoe maker and shows him as not being born in the county.
In the 1878 Post Office Directory of Surrey the village of Ripley is recorded as being situated between Portsmouth and London, 21 miles from London and 5 miles south east of Woking station; the population in 1871 was 952.
Elizabeth married William Jones (a Bootmaker) in 1859 (again her father's name is not recorded on the certificate) in Ripley and the family have been traced through the censuses; in 1861 in Ripley, in 1871 in Reigate, in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses in Epsom; in 1901 Elizabeth is listed as a widow.

Aug 1842 in Ripley Surrey the son of Henry and Hannah (née Giles); he was the eldest of eleven children and followed his father into the trade of shoemaker.
Henry is recorded in the 1851 census of Ripley as a nine year old schoolchild; in 1861 he is shown as a shoemaker still living with his parents however, in 1871 again with his parents, he is listed as a Post Messenger.
All of their children were born in Ripley but there is a gap between 1885 and 1891 and it seems that there were no other children born during these dates.

Nothing is known of his early childhood until April 1860 when, at the age of 14, he was apprenticed to Stephen Green as a Cordwainer (shoemaker or leather worker) in Ripley, Surrey, his fees were paid for by the Haynes Charity Trust; his apprenticeship indenture is transcribed below.
This indenture witnesseth that William Tappin, son of Henry Tappin of Ripley, Surrey, Cordwainer, with the consent of the Trustees of the Haynes Charity.

Ripley was brought to the forefront in the 19th century by its love of cricket and cycling.
Ripley village green was the venue of a match between Chertsey verses the rest of Surry in 1762, and a meal was supplied by the White Horse's Mr Fowler.
The village also joined forces with Cobham, Woking and Pirbright to play two matches against the five-year-old Farnham club in 1787, and it was here that Farnham was requested to exclude their best bowler in the first fixture, despite of the already unbalanced nature of the side, but they still won by seven wickets.
