As of the 2000 census (Mayor John Reinsch), the city population was 6,828.
Ripon, named for the English cathedral city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, was founded in 1849 by David P. Mapes, a former New York steamboat captain.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older.

The City of Ripon, originally known as Murphy's Ferry, was one of several river crossings that sprang up in 1850 to carry gold seekers and settlers to and from the Stanislaus River.
In 1925, the Ripon Sanitary District was formed by purchasing 45 acres of sewer disposal land near the Stanislaus River, south of town, with a $30,000 bond issue.
The City of Ripon was incorporated in 1945, with the Chamber of Commerce as the leading sponsor and financial backer.

The city had been founded in 1849, when Captain David P. Mapes (whose steamboat and worldly fortune had recently sunk in New York's East River) trudged out to Wisconsin, looked over the land adjacent to Ceresco, and decided that it was the perfect place to start building a new life.
Ripon was named for the cathedral city in England where the seventh-century ecclesiastical statesman and scholar Wilfrid of Ripon conducted a school which influenced almost every great university in Europe.
Ripon was one of the first of its kind in the Midwest to develop attractive programs of these sorts -- in fact, the first student newspaper in Wisconsin (the College Days) had already been established at Ripon in 1868.

The city now uses a rental tank provided by the contract sludge hauler and another tank owned by the city which do not provide adequate sludge storage capacity.
The estimated project cost associated with this addition is $152,000; the city intends to seek funding from the Wisconsin Clean Water Fund loan to help pay for the additional work.
