"Ripping Yarns" (1976)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
'Ripping Yarns' is basically a send up of 'Boys Own' style between-the-wars boys adventure magazines, which might not make a great deal of sense to American audiences, but when I played the episode 'Winfrey's Last Case' to a friend in San Diego he was almost reduced to tears.
There were twelve(?) 'Ripping Yarns' stories, and one shouldn't infer anything from that.
Pound for pound, 'Ripping Yarns' stacks up against any British comedy series of the 70's, and proves that Palin was the best actor of the Python crew, and along with Cleese and maybe Jones, the best writer.

Ripping Yarns was a series of 30-minute comical tales filmed for the BBC, written with the help of fellow Pythoneer Terry Jones.
Although these yarns from the late 1970s actually make fun of the virtues on which the British Empire was supposedly based, there is clearly a lot of affection for that lost World as well.
This is the first of the Ripping Yarn series and I guarantee you will want to add the other two series as well to your video collection.

Ripping Yarns [1975 - 1979] @ EOFFTV   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In the wake of the dissolution of the Monty Python unit, Palin and Jones turned their hands to this terribly British and often achingly funny spoof of high adventure tales.
Ripping Yarns has never achieved the iconic status attained by John Cleese's manic seaside farce Fawlty Towers [1975 - 1979], but it remains a consistently entertaining romp nonetheless.
The chief difference is that while Cleese was lampooning the idiocy of contemporary British culture, Palin and Jones were taking us on a maniacal history tour, each episode visiting a different setting and period to tell its tale of gung-ho heroics and reckless bravado.

This is the weakest of the three Ripping Yarns tapes, but even at their weakest, Michael Palin and Terry Jones are brilliant.
This episode showcases the genius of Palin and Jones, in that they´re able to successfully balance pathos and humour, giving the viewer a subtlety, richness, and depth that sadly cannot be matched by later competent British comedies like Black Adder or The Young Ones.
Neither "Murder at..." nor "Across the Andes by frog" are personal favourites but "Murder" is a loving spoof and "Andes" one of the most whimsically absurd stories of the whole series.

Here, though, the headmaster is ritually beaten by his pupils, the school bully is an official post (filled by a suave Raffles type festooned with half-naked Filipino women), boys are nailed to the wall for minor breaches of discipline and Tomkinson's mother seems to have forgotten his first name.
Palin and Jones' track record and big-screen experience (the first series was made between Monty Python and the Holy Grail in 1975 and Life of Brian in 1979) meant that production values were unusually lavish, with meticulous period reconstructions shot on film rather than videotape.
As a result, Ripping Yarns has dated far less than most of its contemporaries, and is just as funny today as when first broadcast.

 Ripping Yarns
Ripping Yarns was a series of low-key, subtly funny stories in the style of Victorian/Edwardian boys' adventure books.
As the writers had wished, the production values were of a uniformly high standard, but this meant that the costs were significantly higher than normal for a comedy half-hour.
Because it was shot on film, the series has withstood the passing of time much better than most other programmes of the period, and Palin and Jones's excellent scripts mean that there is still a wealth of comedy lurking in these nine classic Ripping Yarns.

Although Palin and Jones, working as a team, had written a few one-shot comedies for British television during Flying Circus's run, Ripping Yarns was their first major undertaking after that show had ended, airing during the long hiatus between the first and second seasons of fellow Python John Cleese's enormously successful Fawlty Towers.
Ripping Yarns was a real-life adventure annual from the early- to mid-20th century, and the show spoofs the various sub-genres popular in such fiction.
Unlike Flying Circus's smorgasbord of comedy, Ripping Yarns satirizes a specific style of storytelling that will be less than familiar to most viewers today.

The series was called Ripping Yarns, a play on words, with the stories being pastiches of Boy’s Own Adventure tales, with appropriate daring-do opening titles in the style of an illustrated book jacket of the period.
It’s a shame, but as the programme is included on a Ripping Yarns release it’s not noticeable for the average purchaser who didn’t know that the substitutions have had to be made.
Amongst those titles was Ripping Yarns, which had originally been released on three tapes, each containing three episodes apiece.

It was basically a collection of tales of great adventure, mystery, suspense and high drama, that made for ripping good television.
As a result, when Palin and Jones were planning a second series, the BBC decided they could afford only three more shows - a 1920s espionage thriller (Whinfrey's Last case), a football story (Golden Gordon) and a spoof of the overtly racist yarns that passed unchallenged in old schoolboy annuals (Roger Of The Raj).
Because it was shot on film rather than video, the series has withstood the passing of time much better than most programs of the period, and Palin and Jones's excellent scripts mean there is still a wealth of comedy lurking in these nine classics.
