Risaldar (often called Ressaidar in the British Indian Army), meaning in Persian commander of a risala (mounted troop) is a mid-level rank in cavalry and armoured units of the Indian Army.
The Indian Army has a unique set of ranks, which stand between a non-commissioned officers and commissioned officers.
A Risaldar ranks above a Naib Risaldar (called a Jemadar in the British Indian Army) and below a Risaldar Major.

I wonder if Gauhar Ayub has mentioned in his book that his grandfather, Risaldar Mir Dad Khan, served in a well-known Indian Cavalry regiment called 4th (Hodson’s) Horse, which destroyed many American-made Patton tanks with British-made Centurians in both the 1965 and 1971 wars.
Mir Dad Khan’s framed photograph is still a part of the Risaldar Majors’ ‘Rogues’ Gallery’ at the Junior Commissioned Officers’; Mess of the regiment.
I mention this photograph because a retired Pakistani Army officer and veteran of the formerly undivided Indian Army under the British, who visited the Indian Military Academy at Dehra Dun during a trip to India, became very emotional on seeing his photograph, taken during his days as a cadet, still hanging on the walls.
