  House of Mabel: Computers: RiscPC
The RiscPC was a great leap forward for Acorn, but the 24bit graphics was playing catch-up, not the great revolution 256 colours had been in the days of 4 colour PCs.
The idea is that I'll use it as a template for building a custom case for the home machine/MP3 player/fileserver I eventually built after buying a new motherboard, an old prototype processor, and got the company I worked for to shell out for the OS ROMs after they made me work late.
I then tried to modify a Phoebe case to take a RiscPC without dumping the motherboard in sideways, which required cutting away a lot of metal work, and that was going to be replaced with the Lego I'd just bought framing sheets of clear perspex.

 About Acorn
The Acorn RiscPC is not to compare with any other computer, especially the common ones.
The RiscPC takes between 20 and 40 seconds until he is operational, it depends on how many applications are started with the booting.
The RiscPC has the multitasking-system at its disposal, this system makes it happen that even more processes can be executed in the same time without the processor getting into a sweat, without a crash of the system.

The RiscPC 700 had an ARM710 processor and RISC OS 3.6, and the SA had the StrongARM processor and RISC OS 3.7.
Castle Technology Ltd later introduced the IYONIX pc with the 32-bit X-Scale processor and USB sockets.

RiscPC II The other thing which we need to do, this is the other thing which we are looking at at the show, is how we improve the desktop performance.
One of the key things that we've done on the second generation RiscPC, RiscPC II as we still call it, one of the main things which we're going for is make it as fast as we possibly could.

Re: Debian testing/unstable on RiscPC ?
Since this problem has gone unnoticed for over a year, and RiscPC support has always been kind of sketchy in any case, I'm kind of inclined to just declare that Debian will no longer support ARMv3 processors from Sarge onwards.
There is some precedent for this in other architectures: the SPARC port has dropped sun4c in Sarge, and the x86 port has likewise dropped i386.
Nobody has shown a great deal of interest in implementing debian-installer for RiscPC, which also suggests that there are not very many users on this platform any more.

IYONIX pc News   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Once current RiscPC supplies have been exhausted the RISC OS market will be based on the Acorn A7000+ and IYONIX pc, both produced exclusively by Castle, and other RISC OS machines from independent manufacturers.
The RiscPC was announced by Acorn early in 1994 and went on sale in the spring of that year.
Given the short lifespans of so many other computers it is a striking affirmation of Acorn's original design for the RiscPC that it has remained at the centre of the RISC OS world for nearly ten years.

As standard they have two processor slots, one is normally occupied by an ARM processor card (the primary processor), and the other is free allowing the addition of a second ARM, Intel, Motorola or other secondary processor.
While the design of the primary processor card may be relatively simple the second processor card must incorporate a certain amount of arbitration logic to enable it to share the bus with the primary processor.
The Hydra card interfaces with the RiscPC via one of the processor slots and duplicates both of the original slots and combines additional slots with the necessary arbitration logic to support a further four ARM processor cards.

To the London event hosted by Acorn, were invited various RISC OS enthusiasts, who were encouraged to post to Usenet, including this detailed report by David Ruck.
The RiscPC, although remaining essentially the same, underwent significant performance and functionality changes via processor and RISC OS upgrades from Acorn, and the plethora of expansion cards, PC cards, memory upgrades from other parties.
This was aided by its novel, yet infamous and often cursed, slice system, allowing the case to be easily expanded, but often also, items in the lower of the machine became hard to reach without taking the whole machine apart.

I guess Acorn needed to provide prototype RiscPCs to their 3rd party hardware and software developers, so that they could test existing hardware and software on a RiscPC and modify it if necessary, and ensure the products were available at launch and certified to run on a RiscPC.
In April 1994 Acorn launched the RiscPC 600, their first major hardware change since the launch of the A540 and the ARM3 CPU in 1990.
In July 1995, with the launch of the RiscPC 700, the RiscPC 600 was upgraded to use a 33MHz ARM610 CPU, 16bit sound and RISC OS 3.60,.

 StrongARM Cards
For more than 3 years now, the StrongArm RiscPC has been the fastest, smoothest and most productive way of running RISC OS, and the applications which you know and love.
When Acorn designed the RiscPC, it was built around a 33Mhz Arm610 processor, with the possibility of upgrading to a 40Mhz Arm710 in the future.
Quite clearly, the best way to achieve this would be to design a new computer from scratch, but that would add to the expense, and also rely on major updates to RISC OS.
