The South-London pop/soul singer's second album has a completely different focus to both its predecessor, Find Your Way, and the follow-up, Rise, which are both far more pop-orientated.
On her self-titled album, Gabrielle has the most mature sound of the three albums and on most tracks it pays off - 'Give Me A Little More Time' and 'If You Really Cared' both sound like they come from the 60s and this is no criticism...
Gabrielle has a wonderful voice, singing deeply expressive and moving ballads without slush.

Rise - Gabrielle - Review - Album Review: Gabrielle ? Rise
Not as strong as the normal songs she does, in fact a little tedious, but the song adds a bit of light entertainment between the heart-wrenching sadness and Gabrielle?s voice is undeniably stronger on the up-tempo tracks.
The song, however, comes across as very personal and there are moments which sound brilliant, tho ugh by now the slow tempo of the album is getting a little tedious.
Falling: By now you will be thinking that When A Woman is the only up-tempo song on the album, but as this record starts with its thudding snare/cymbal beat, you can feel a genuine 60s Motown song coming on.

Desree - Dream Soldier @ Designer Magazine
"Dream Soldier" is the album which is going to do for Desree what "Who I Am" did for Beverley Knight" and "Rise" for Gabrielle.
Desree is a huge vocal talent and if she just handed over lyrical duties to one of the songwriting production teams in the US she could reach out to a new audience, but as it stands "Dream Soldier" is an album of classic tunes let down by the pen of Desree herself.
The fact that all anyone remembers Desree for is classic lines such "I'd rather have a piece of toast" on her "Life" single overshadows the fact that despite her dire rhyming dictionary lyrics she is one of our long-standing British Female Soul talents.
