 Birchwood Town Council
The Risley family lived on the estate until the beginning of the 18th century when it was sold to the Blackburne family in 1736.
There were 30 tenant farmers on the Risley estate, as well as a Blacksmith, a Wheelwright, a School and a Chapel.
Risley was chosen because it was a flat site and often covered by mist, which would help to hide it from enemy aeroplanes.

 SAC selection - 7120 Degraded raised bogs still capable of natural regeneration
East Flanders Moss is the largest raised bog in the UK that is still in a predominantly near-natural state.
Some peat-cutting has taken place in the south-east and south-west of the moss, lowering the surface by about 1.5 m, and it is here that the bog is degraded.
Meathop Moss, Nichols Moss and Foulshaw Moss are remnants of a formerly interconnected peat body on the west side of the Kent estuary, on its coastal plain.

The inaugural meeting of the Cheshire Mammal Group (CMag) took place on Saturday 6th October 2001 at Risley Moss LNR near Warrington (SJ668922).
A training day dealing with the capture, identification and recording of small mammals, along with owl pellet analysis, was undertaken at Risley Moss on Saturday 5th January 2002.
This was led by Rob Smith, a Ranger with Halton BC who is normally based at Pickerings Pasture on the Mersey but has a long association with both Risley Moss and the action group RIMAG.

Throughout History travellers have avoided the Birchwood area because it of its dangerous moss, however gradually over time much of the fertile mossland was reclaimed and turned into farm land.
The area east of Birchwood is mainly Birch forests and Risley Moss.

 Cheshire Wildlife Trust
Lowland raised bogs were once extensive habitats, formed in wet climatic phases in the flood plains of major rivers.
In the region these habitats were a feature of the river systems at the base of the Pennine fringe, creating large areas such as those at Holcroft Moss and Risley Moss near Warrington, in the Mersey catchment, and a Lindow Moss, White Moss and Danes Moss, further south.
This is due to drainage for agricultural use, peat cutting for fuel in earlier times and extraction for horticultural peat.

However further south on Astley Moss, a single Large Red-belted Clearwing (Synanthedon culiciformis) came briefly to a lure set by Paul Cleary-Pugh.
An intriguing message was left in the Leighton Moss log on the 24th May. It reported the sighting of a Narrow-bordered Bee Hawk-moth (Hemaris tityus) at Jack Scout National Trust Reserve, on the coast south of Silverdale.
The reporter, Jonathan Fenton, has kindly supplied details of his sighting but it is still not possible to be certain that the species involved was H. tityus.

Only the third recent record in the county of Blackneck came from Bold Moss, St Helens on 23/6 (RB, CD) closely followed by further records on 6/7 (2) and 22/7 in Flixton (KM) and on 21/7 at Holcroft Moss (KM).
At the same time Round-winged Muslin and Marsh Oblique-barred from Risley Moss (PCP) were significant in that they had not been recorded in VC59 for many years.
Garden Tiger, a species apparently declining in numbers, came to light in Widnes (PH) on 3/7 and on the same day a new county record of Clay Triple-lines was reported from Meresands Wood NR (GF, IK, DR).

I have seen them at Rostherne Mere, nr Mobberley and Risley Moss.
The best place to try is Risley Moss Nature Reserve which has a tower hide overlooking the remnants of ancient mossland in the area.
I'll definitely try Risley Moss, Rob and I know a few birders near Mobberley so I can see if they've had any luck.
