Whilst the reasons for succumbing to drugs when in prison are as many and varied as the stimulants which are available to the inmate population, not least among these is a peer pressure often engineered by a powerful dealer either within or without the prison walls.
Such a strategy would encompass pro-active intelligence gathering and target operations concerning prison inmates and visitors; police visitors would be given the assistance necessary to effect their purpose and prison contacts with the police properly directed to ensure feedback is given where appropriate.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Risley plans to tell jurors that Williams is a member of the Nazi Low Riders, a white supremacist prison gang.
Risley wants to tell jurors about Williams' gang membership because it explains why Wendy Strause and Roy Palmer, who were in the car, were scared to tell detectives the truth in the beginning of the investigation.
Risley said he doesn't plan to call Strause to the stand because of this.

Michael W. Risley, the prosecutor in each of William Richards' trials, said he is "fairly confident the DNA analysis will not exculpate Richards," who was convicted on circumstantial evidence.
Risley said investigators accounted for every shoeprint and tire mark on the property, eliminating the possibility that anybody but Richards was the killer.
Risley said Brooks and the Innocence Project attorneys have tried to prove Richards' innocence out of a "few peculiarities" in the case.

Any (ex) prisoner will tell you that for both complainants (given their histories) to claim to have not considered claiming compensation was simply not credible.
On the first morning he was going around the various prison workplaces trying to find employment when he was approached by 'Anderson' (a fellow prisoner) who warned him to ask for a transfer out or he would live to regret it.
He remained in Risley until his release on parole in June 2001 and feels the decision he made at that time was the correct one.

Although I was interviewing prisoners about their educational background, inevitably during these lengthy in-depth interviews we discussed the nature of the establishments and those who work there, the way sentences were proceeding and what rehabilitative work was going on in prison to address the reasons for offending and to reduce the likelihood of recidivism.
The twelve women's prisons I visited during the two research projects are listed in the Appendix, although I should mention that my knowledge of HMP Foston Hall is confined only to social visiting: events overtook me and I was unable to apply to visit this prison for a longer period of research.

I am a member of the board of visitors at HM Prison Risley (boards of visitors are the prison watchdogs).
Now we have a prison population of 70,000 and 70% of inmates are said to be illiterate.
In fact the whole emphasis of prison education is on levels one and two to try to teach remedial English.

Organised gangs are operating inside the 1,100-inmate Risley prison, near Manchester, the largest adult male training jail in England and Wales, according to a report published today by the chief inspector of prisons, Anne Owers.
Despite a "robust approach" to drug smuggling into the prison, 15% of prisoners tested positive for drugs and 45% said it was easy or very easy to get hold of illegal drugs.
She said that Risley had a chequered history of changing roles - it had once been a notorious young offender institution - and that there had been outbursts of prisoner indiscipline, often related to gangs and drugs, but it had benefited from a period of relative stability in recent years.

The prison system now has the opportunity to make a positive contribution to this issue by recognising the right to choose a genetically free diet.
However, the Governor of HMP Risley, Mr Johnson, did say that the prisons food policy was available to the public and he was open to discussion.
It was discovered that all the soya milk used for vegans at Risley is organic and therefore GM free and the beakfast cereal was GM free also, although the margerine and pitta bread could well have contained GE soya and oil though and so were refused.

A native of Bethlehem, Conn., Risley earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Michigan State University in 1968 and 1970 and began working in that state's prison system.
In an interview with the Concord Monitor early last year, Risley endorsed truth in sentencing, to which New Hampshire was an early convert.
He also said he was glad New Hampshire had not jumped on the bandwagon of making prison life as harsh as possible in hopes of deterring crime.

Dispersal prisons hold all categories of inmates and we are unable to isolate those costs which relate directly to the category A prisoners.
No prisoner who has participated in the sex offender treatment programme at Risley prison has been moved to Wymott on a compulsory basis, although four prisoners who had completed the formal treatment have so far chosen to go there on voluntary transfer.
No prisoner who has started this kind of course at Risley, either at the present time or in the future, would be considered for any transfer to Wymott until they had completed their course.

Four members of the PRD were released from prison recently [see interview with Wilson bin Nurtiyas] but there seem to be no plans to release the remaining eight.
Another prisoner in Cipinang who must be mentioned, though he can't be strictly considered a "prisoner for peace", is Xanana Gusmão, former leader of the armed resistance in East Timor and current president of the National Council of Timorese Resistance.
He was eventually sentenced to five years in prison, but was released in July of this year as part of a partial amnesty for political prisoners.

The decision, in the case of a 16-year-old girl who spent 15 days in Risley women's prison, Cheshire, is likely to pose serious problems for the Prison Service because of a recent rise in female young offenders being detained.
In a judicial review hearing supported by penal reformers, the girl's lawyers challenged the general Home Office policy under which all female prisoners under 21 are sent automatically to one of five adult prisons for assessment and allocation to juvenile units.
The judges were told that the girl had been found a place at Styal women's prison in Cheshire, which had facilities for juveniles, and would not return to Risley.

A prison officer today admitted trying to smuggle drugs and mobile phones to an inmate in order to pay off a £300 gambling debt.
Bentley, of Runcorn, Cheshire, who had been a prison officer for three years, pleaded guilty at Warrington Magistrates' Court to possession of cannabis with intent to supply and conveying an article, namely four mobile phones, to a prisoner.
Bentley also told the officers he was smuggling the contraband in exchange for the cancellation of the debt, information about a recent incident in the prison and the name of another prison officer dealing drugs on a different wing.

The NH General Court appropriates $8,000.00 for "the erection of a State Prison of stone in the town of Concord, in the County of Rockingham…" on two acres of land near the Court House.
Another $3,000.00 was allotted "for the purpose of erecting a new State Prison on the land now occupied…for a State's Prison." This was actually a new wing with another 127 cells.
The initial prison would house 500 medium security male inmates with the possibility of expansion to 1,000 at a future date.

This would ensure the rights of prisoners to a GM-free diet and add pressure to the public's call for more progressive measures to be taken on this issue.
Other prisoners are expected to follow Sharyn's lead and demand comparative rights in their respective prison.

 Jail chief who spoke out was victimised
A PRISON governor who complained about conditions endured by female inmates accepted a £6,000 settlement yesterday, after winning her claim that she was victimised by the Prison Service.
Following the closure of the women's section at Risley, the Prison Service tried to explore a redundancy package with Mrs Dawson while, at the same time, telling other governors places would be found for them.
Mrs Dawson, who is now head of programmes at Risley men's prison, said she hoped her victory would focus attention on the conditions faced by 3,300 female prisoners in Britain's jails.

NORTH-west prisoners are helping recycle computers as part of an environmental drive to keep old electrical equipment out of landfill sites.
Twenty inmates at Risley Prison, near Warrington, are dismantling old hardware for Belmont Technology Remarketing so that the components can be re-used.
The scheme is aimed both at preparing prisoners for work life outside the jail and also preventing old toxic metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium leaching into groundwater supplies.
