Coolidge spoke with INDIAN ARTIST while preparing for a round of performances in the Southwest with Walela, the singing trio she founded with her sister Priscilla Coolidge and Laura Satterfield, Priscilla’s daughter.
Rita’s father, Dick Coolidge, was a Cherokee preacher in the Baptist Church, and her mother, Charlotte Stewart, was Cherokee and Scotch.
Rita and her sisters, Priscilla and Linda, were all powerful singers, as were both her parents, so the girls did not have to endure the anti-musical propaganda that many musicians have to face.

Rita though, was strong enough to handle the road and in a tribute, Leon Russell wrote a song about her called "Delta Lady".

Rita's voice has never been stronger, and she sounds great covering the many varied styles she does here.
If you are a Rita Coolidge fan but have never had the opportunity to hear this album, I highly recommend it.

Coolidge's MOR success continued through the Eighties: another No. 1 in '83 with the theme from Octopussy, "All Time High." Though it might have been fun to hear Joe Cocker or Delaney & Bonnie cuts, the 2-CD Delta Lady covers Coolidge's career from debut to the present.
In the end, it's the voice of Rita Coolidge that carries Delta Lady, and it does so with rare elegance and grace.
