In the county, the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county is $27,332, and the median income for a family is $34,809.

The county was named for Thomas Ritchie (1778-1854), a Virginia journalist and politician.
The county developed rapidly with the construction of two turnpikes and the Parkersburg branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad through the area.
The town hosts the annual Ritchie County Fair, one of the largest fairs in the state and the first to be established.

HARRISVILLE - Ritchie County Commission is asking the state Public Service Commission to hold a public meeting in its county to explain the rate increase in natural gas prices.
County commissioners believe the increase is excessive and want to know what emergency assistance is available to the public having trouble paying their bills.
"Whereas the county commission believes this natural gas rate increase is not in the best interests of the county's citizens or its businesses, the commission is sending a formal protest and asking for a public meeting," it states.

The state then mandated that the County Commissioners would be responsible to see there was a service in each county.
Ritchie County did not know how to organize its' newly formed services, so Charles Brissey of Berea, a member of the Doddridge County Emergency Squad agreed to help.
The organization is to be governed by the officers of each division; The county officers would consist of President, Vice President, Secretary, and a Board of Directors which consists of two representatives of each tax district and one county commissioner.

Currently Ritchie County has 4 elementary schools with an enrollment of approximately 800 students and one middle/high school which was consolidated in 1993.
This would mean students in Ritchie County will have to endure longer bus rides to attend school.
The one exemplary school in the county, Cairo Elementary School, was closed at the end of the school year in 2002.

Tales of railroad lore and history all along the B and O through Ritchie County to Clarksburg, Grafton, Cowan, Parkersburg, and 100 little towns along the way.
Wilson used a copy of an 1833 map of the Clarksburg to Parkersburg section of the road and enlarged it to scale, to a size of 22 inches by 42 inches.
The map includes portions of Harrison, Doddridge, Ritchie and Wood Counties and includes location of Indian trails, early county lines, other early roads, streams, etc. The society is reproducing the map in color so it will be easier to distinguish the trails and roads from the streams.

HARRISVILLE - A nine-month investigation by members of the Ritchie County Eradication and Crisis Team (R.E.A.C.T.) culminated in the discovery of a methamphetamine lab and two arrests after serving five search warrants, said Sheriff Ron Barniak.
The investigation began when Wyoming County sheriff's office officials contacted Ritchie County sheriff's officials with information that led to the arrest of Steven T. Lusk Sr.
Lusk, 42, also known as "Big T", was arrested and charged with delivery of a controlled substance stemming from the Wyoming County investigation.
