The forerunner of the university was the Chemistry School (舎密局, Seimi-kyoku: 舎密 is a transcription of a Dutch word chemie) founded in Osaka in 1869, which, despite its name, taught physics as well.

Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto had a small forge (tanrenjo) set up during World War II which made swords for the military and the war effort.
Most swords made at the Ritsumeikan University Tanrenjo are signed "Oite Ritsumeikan" (made at Ritsumeikan) with the name of the swordsmith or swordsmiths.
Ritsumeikan University was not the only Japanese university to have a tanrenjo on its premises.

Ritsumeikan University won the 24th All JPN Collegiate Women’s Ekiden Championships, which were held over the six-stage 38.6Km course in Sendai on Sunday 29 October.
Ritsumeikan covered the 38.6Km course in 2:07:21, while the defending champions and the pre-race favourites Meijyo University finished second in 2:08:15.
Ritsumeikan was in eighth place 20 seconds behind the leader after the 6Km first stage, but thanks to brilliant run by Kazue Kojima, they took over the lead 5.4Km into the second stage.

Ironic is the fact that Ritsumeikan still wants these temporary workers to have university teaching experience and high qualifications (such as a PhD and enough Japanese language ability to perform administrative duties), yet refuses them the same job status as their equally-qualified (or even less-qualified entry-level) Japanese educators.
Ritsumeikan is, in the Blacklist author's opinion, prevaricatingly playing with contractural wording to lure oblivious candidates.

Ritsumeikan University (Rits) is allegedly one of the best privately-funded universities in Japan, though state universities have higher prestige.
This arrangement was adopted when I was an undergraduate at another university, and I hear that many disabled students manage their lives in a similar manner.
In Japan, some of the wider streets have "screws" (raised aggregate) for blind people to find their way by searching for the "screws." Also on some streets there are traffic lights which are designed to inform the blind of when it is okay to cross.

In late November and early December of 2000 I began a two-week residency at Sophia University in Tokyo; there I was a guest of the University's Institute for American and Canadian Studies and of its wise, gracious, and urbane Director, Professor Kazuyuki Matsuo.
During my stay I lectured to several undergraduate classes at Sophia University, met with students and colleagues, and also had the opportunity to offer seminars at other institutions such as Chiba University, the University of Tokyo, and Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto.
At Kyoto, in addition to my seminar presentation at Ritsumeikan University, I had the opportunity to visit the celebrated shrines of the area and to stay at a traditional Japanese inn.
