  Volcanic Landforms: Features
A crater sits at the top of a volcano and is the location where much of the lava, gas and other rock fragments are ejected from.
An extremely large crater is some times found at the summit of a volcano.
These massive craters called calderas, are created when pressure builds inside the volcano until the top is literally blown off, magma drains back into the central vent and the top of the cone collapses in.

During a brief trip to Pu`u` O`o on the morning of the 6th, scientists saw that the crater lake had risen ~8 m since 29 March (the lake surface was 17 m below the E rim), several cones were active, and lava was flowing into the lava lake from two vents.
The crater of Pu`u `O`o was dark and obscured by fume.
During 29 January to 1 February mild volcanic activity occurred at Kilauea, with incandescence visible at vents in Pu`u `O`o's crater and small surface flows on the central or southern part of the rootless shield complex, an area ~0.5 km SW of Pu`u `O`o.

Considering that ffc are modified by volcanism - witness the dark halo craters on the northern and southern sides of the floor - the expectation is that the smooth material is volcanic.

The craters and the fragmental debris were probably formed by bombardment of the lunar surface by meteoroids and by pieces of the Moon itself, hurled through space from larger craters.
The crater, one of hundreds of thousands of this type on the Moon, is much akin to the well-known Meteor Crater in Arizona; namely, caused by the impact of an outside mass.
The rock on the near rim of the crater is 2 feet across and casts a 4-foot-long shadow to its left.
