At the same time it is also a very impressive artistic creation exhibiting the peak of calligraphic skill employed by a single woman, who produced all of the award certificates at this level.
Her skill and talent helped recognize the military skills and talent shown by the achievement(s) of the individual to whom the Ritterkreuz was awarded.
The document for Hauptmann Krafft is particularly impressive, as he was the commander of Gruppe 1 of JG 51, a very famous fighter squadron named for the highly respected WWI fighter ace, Werner Mölders.

Leutnant Bär became the Gruppenkommandeur of IV/JG 51 as the unit transferred to the East on July 27, 1941 attached to JG 53 "Pik As", to join the invasion of the Soviet Union.
On February 16, 1942, Bär was awarded the Schwertern (or Swords) to his Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub plus he was promoted to Hauptmann (or Captain) after his 90th aerial victory.

 Romanian Knights Cross Holders of WWII
As Commander in Chief of the Royal Romanian Armed Forces, Antonescu ostensibly received his Ritterkreuz in recognition for his leadership of the Romanian troops during the initial stages of the Russian campaign.
As commander of the 11th Infantry Division, Radulescu received his Ritterkreuz in recognition of his division's local counterattack at Tirgu Frumos in eastern Romania, conducted in early June of 1944 against strong Soviet forces.
Racovita's Ritterkreuz, the last one received by a Romanian, was won due to his role as commander of the oft-luckless Romanian 4th Army (prior to this appointment he commanded the Cavalry Corps), in its final manifestation/reconstitution from March 1944 or more specifically, for 4th Army's role in the Tirgu Frumos counterattack (see under Radulescu).

Moving West, Hahn scored his first two victories, over RAF Hurricanes, in his first engagement with enemy aircraft on May 14, 1940 during The Battle of France.
After scoring his 20th victory, on Sept. 20, 1940, Hahn was awarded the Ritterkreuz and elevated from Staffelkapitan, 4.
For scoring his 41st victory on August 14, 1941, Hahn was awarded the Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub and promoted to Hauptmann.

General der Fallschirmtruppe Ramcke surrendered Festung Brest on September 19th, the same day he was awarded the Swords (99th Recipient) and Diamonds (20th recipient) to the Ritterkreuz.
As a prisoner of war, Ramcke's only wish in captivity was that his men were fairly treated.

It is an early cross, predating March 1941 when Dr Doehle tightened up and enforced the rules governing the manufacture of the Ritterkreuz.
There are a couple of chips to the paint of the swastika, which the old gentleman who owned the cross for decades decided to touch in with a felt tip pen or something, sometime between the first occasion on which I saw it and now.
But in the end, it is one of only three nickle-framed, zinc-centred Juncker Ritterkreuze known to exist, according to Pieter Verbruggen, who has one.

Karl Nicolussi-Leck received the Ritterkreuz for his determined advance into the encircled city of Kowel.
On 30th March 1944 he managed, although receiving orders from his commanding officers to break off his attempts, to reach Kowel with the remaining 7 Panthers of his 8th company and 50 supporting men of the 131st Infantry Division.
One of the last men of the Kampfgruppe “Wiking” was Georg Perchtold; he managed to join a unit of the Panzer Division “Clausewitz” and was killed on the 20th April 1945.

and yes Bill, you're correct the Commander's Cross is substantially larger than the Ritterkreuz.
The cross in the case is mine, the case was bought at auction in Hamburg.

 National Air and Space Society - Günther Rall Biography
After amounting a record of 36 victories in November 1941, Rall was seriously wounded with injuries that paralyzed him for six months.
Returning to combat with 8/JG 52 in August of 1942, he was awarded his Ritterkreuz (Knight's Cross) for his 65th victory on September 3rd and his Eichenlaub (Oak Leaves) on October 26th for his 100th victory.
In April 1943, General Rall was promoted to Hauptmann (Captain) and elevated to Gruppenkommandeur (Group Commander) of Jagdgruppe (Fighter Group) III/JG 52.
