  Rurik - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rurik or Riurik (Old East Norse Rørik, meaning "famous ruler") (ca 830 – ca 879) was a Varangian who gained control of Ladoga in 862 and built the Holmgard settlement (Rurikovo Gorodische) in Novgorod.
Riurik is the Slavic rendering of the same Germanic name as the modern English Roderick.
In Old Norse, Hrœrekr (Norway, Iceland) and Hrørīkr or Rørik (Denmark, Sweden), from which Riurik is derived.

According to the PVL, Ihor was the son of the great Varangian (Viking) leader Riurik, who had been invited to rule over Rus' lands around the year 860.
The few campaigns recorded for Ihor in 913-915 and 920 echo similar events recorded earlier (expeditions against the Derevlianians are first mentioned in 883)_13_ and for 945 and later,_14_ and were clearly made up by the chronicler to "fill in" embarrassing lacunae.
