RIVA TNT - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RIVA TNT (For TwiN Texel) was a 3D graphics chipset manufactured by NVIDIA.
The TNT was designed as a followup to the RIVA 128 and a response to 3dfx's introduction of the Voodoo2.
Like the RIVA 128 but unlike the Voodoo2, it was a single chip solution for both 2D and 3D.

The RIVA 128 was a 3D graphics chipset manufactured by NVIDIA.
Released in late 1997, the RIVA 128 was one of the first generation of consumer 3D chips.
The RIVA 128 supported 4MiB of RAM on a 128-bit bus, and like all consumer cards of its generation, had a single pixel pipeline and was limited to a 16-bit (Highcolour) pixel format and a 16-bit Z-buffer in 3D mode.

To be fair however, I was working for Real 3D at the time, and it was my job to help bury NVidia and the Riva 128 (you see who was buried don't you).
The Riva 128 was a very fast chip, and compared to software rendering, it made games look great in comparison to software rasterized games at 320 X 200!
Texturing was very poor quality (remember, I was used to a i740 and the R3D-100, and a very powerful image generator, the core of which was the same as a Sega commercial arcade game).

STB was highly successful in the OEM marketplace with their Velocity 128 card, and this fact made them a nice target months later when 3dfx looked for a partner they could use to penetrate the tough OEM marketplace.
Its visuals were horrible by today's pixel-accurate graphics, its OpenGL driver needed many revisions to achieve the speed that it finally provided, and with 3dfx's hammer lock on their proprietary Glide API, the Riva 128 had to wait for Microsoft's DirectX SDK to fully mature.
In terms of historical value though, the Riva 128 was the first musket shot from a company that now regularly lobs nuclear weapons with a constant mantra of "a new product every six months" emanating from the top down.

According to figures from JPA vice president Andy Fischer, Nvidia shipped 2.5 million Riva 128 units in its first seven months on the market, while fourth-quarter PowerVR sales are conservatively estimated at greater than 250,000 units.
In its bid to dominate this fall's performance-PC lineup, Nvidia's Riva 128ZX chip addresses some of the limitations of its predecessor by raising the RAMDAC's clock speed from 230 MHz to 250 MHz, boosting the speed of the AGP interface from 1X to 2X, and doubling the addressable memory to 8 Mbytes.
By comparison, the Riva 128 scored a 3DWinbench mark of 553, according to analysts' reports.

By looking at the faults of the cards the competition had under development at the time Canopus chose the smart route in the design process of the 128V, the engineers at Canopus decided to exploit the faults of their competitors to the furthest extent possible, and this they did with style, sophistication, and skill.
Performance wise the Riva 128 chipset has been proven time and time again, there is very little room for improvement in that category so it would be senseless and poor marketing to rely on that aspect of a product alone to achieve a high rate of success in the industry.
Not to say that Canopus' attempt at the Riva 128 market was a failed one as far as performance is concerned, actually the truth is far from that.
