RIVA 128 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RIVA 128 was one of the early AGP 2X parts, giving it some more marketing headroom by being on the forefront of interface technology.
RIVA 128 was scorned for its poor texture filtering and strange rendering bugs.
RIVA 128 was never able to accelerate the hugely popular Unreal engine in Direct3D mode due to missing hardware features.

 RIVA 128
Released in late 1997, the RIVA 128 was one of the first generation of consumer 3D chips.
At the time, it was viewed as being lower-quality than the industry-leading 3dfx Voodoo chipset, but had the advantage of being a combined 2D/3D graphics chip which did not require a separate 2D card to which to output.
The RIVA 128 supported 4MiB of RAM on a 128-bit bus, and like all consumer cards of its generation, had a single pixel pipeline and was limited to a 16-bit (Highcolour) pixel format and a 16-bit Z-buffer in 3D mode.

Unfortunately, because this came after the release of the Riva 128, we were not able to include this into our unified driver architecture.

Gamasutra - Hard Bytes [02.27.98] - Nvidia announces new version of Riva 128
New capabilities of the Riva 128ZX, in comparison to the first generation device, are support for AGP 2X operation with sideband addressing; support for up to 8 Mbytes of frame buffer memory (8 or 16 Mbit SGRAM), and the inclusion of a 250 MHz RAMDAC (up from 230 MHz).
The larger frame buffer and faster RAMDAC allow the Riva 128ZX to drive a monitor at up to 1600 x 1200 x 24 bpp resolution with an 85 Hz refresh rate.
When coupled with the Riva 128ZX, the new drivers deliver 3D WinBench 98 results (as quoted by Nvidia) of 721 on a 300 MHz Pentium II, and 781 on a 333 MHz Pentium II.

 Review: Jaton Video-78AGP graphics card
The 128ZX is the evolved version of the older 128, the chief difference being 8Mb of video memory, for support of higher resolutions and a big 3D texture memory boost.
In 640 by 480 resolution - the same as the maximum Z-buffered resolution of the Voodoo Graphics - it outperforms the Voodoo board by a tiny margin on Pentium class computers and up to 25%, depending on the phase of the moon and the power of the processor, on Pentium-II class machines.
Like many AGP cards, the 128ZX doesn't actually use the fancy AGP texturing feature which allows system memory, as opposed to video card memory, to be used for texture storage.

After the initial release of the Riva 128 chipset it seemed as if the chipset itself was reason enough to leave nVidia out of the competition when it came to overall quality.
According to the first press releases directly from nVidia, the Riva TNT chipset was supposed to be manufactured using a 0.25 micron process, clocked at 125MHz, and was supposed to be powerful enough to be a Voodoo2-killer because of its 250 Million Pixels per Second fill rate.
