RIVA TNT - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RIVA TNT (For TwiN Texel) was a 3D graphics chipset manufactured by NVIDIA.
The TNT was designed as a followup to the RIVA 128 and a response to 3dfx's introduction of the Voodoo2.
Like the RIVA 128 but unlike the Voodoo2, it was a single chip solution for both 2D and 3D.

 2. Chipset nVidia Riva TNT
When you say nVidia you soon think at Riva 128, a chipset very popular in 1998 for its high 2D and 3D performance; but don’t forget the first born, NV1, which has been one of the first 3D accelerators and introduced many novelties in the field of 3D graphic chips (it even had audio functions).
TNT architecture includes a double rendering pipeline at 32 bits which allows to work on two pixel at each clock cycle with an official fill rate of 180 million of pixels per second.
Riva TNT is a full-128 bit chipset with SDRAM or SGRAM support up to 16 Mb; typical working frequency are 90 MHz for the processor and 110 MHz for the memory.

TNT stands for `Twin Texel' and is supposed to point out that TNT has got two rendering pipelines that can work in parallel, equivalent to the two texelfx2 units in the Voodoo2 chipset.
TNT was supposed to be the Voodoo2-killer in the first place, but it looks as if this will not quite be reached, since NVIDIA had to retract the originally claimed numbers.
TNT scores very well in Turok and comes pretty close after Voodoo2 SLI, as long as you are using a powerful Pentium II and not a cacheless Celeron or even less.

AnandTech: Canopus SPECTRA 2500 Riva TNT
According to the first press releases directly from nVidia, the Riva TNT chipset was supposed to be manufactured using a 0.25 micron process, clocked at 125MHz, and was supposed to be powerful enough to be a Voodoo2-killer because of its 250 Million Pixels per Second fill rate.
What the TNT does bring to the table is fairly impressive considering that in relative comparison, their last 2D/3D chipset was a total bomb in terms of overall quality.
Telling a G200 screen shot from a TNT would require a considerable amount of thought and such a comparison would definitely be reserved for those with an eye for the smallest differences among images, for the rest of us, the TNT's image quality can be considered to be virtually on-par with that of the G200.

At Insight UK the quoted price for a HERCULES RIVA TNT 2 as £140 ($234), quite cheap considering the price of the Voodoo 3, which is around the same price, but with the Savage 4 retailing at £85 ($142) this could affect early sales of the new cards.
