RIVA TNT2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
RIVA TNT2's competition included the 3dfx Voodoo2, 3dfx Voodoo3, the Matrox G400, and the ATI Rage 128.

RIVA TNT - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RIVA TNT (For TwiN Texel), codenamed NV4, is a 2D, video, and 3D graphics accelerator chip for PCs that was manufactured by NVIDIA.
It was released in late 1998 and cemented NVIDIA's reputation as a worthy rival within the developing consumer 3D graphics adapter industry.
The TNT was designed as a follow up to the RIVA 128 and a response to 3Dfx's introduction of the Voodoo2.

 Riva TNT2 - Definition, explanation
The core is almost identical to its predecessor the Riva TNT, however updates included AGP 4X support, up to 32MB of VRAM, and a die shrink from a 0.35 micrometre to a 0.25 micrometre manufacturing process.
The TNT2 now offered comparable performance to the 3dfx Voodoo3, which meant consumers could focus on the additional features of the TNT family, such as Truecolor in 3D.
Although competition in the GPU market was still fierce at this time, the TNT2 chipset marks nVidia's transition to market leader.

 RIVA TNT2
It was the process shrink that enabled improved clock speeds, which is where the substantial performance improvement came from.
A lesser known TNT2 derivative for the budget market was the TNT2 "Vanta" M64, which outperformed the RIVA TNT and cost less to produce.
The entire TNT2 line would be replaced in 2000 by the GeForce 2 MX, although TNT2 chips were still produced until late 2001.

Besides, there is a radiator with a cooler stuck to the chipset upper surface.
To finish with the installation of Creative 3D Blaster Riva TNT2 Ultra we would like to notethat all benchmarks were run with nVidia drivers version 1.88, BIOS version 2.05.2.11 dated backto 5 May, 1999.
If the non-overclocked cards based on Riva TNT2 theperformance drop makes about 30% (which is a bit lower than by an ordinary nVidia Riva TNT -42%), then it gets even greater than that as it comes to overclocked accelerators.

 TNT2
he NVIDIA TNT2™ was the first chipset to offer a 32-bit frame buffer for better quality visuals at higher resolutions, 32-bit color for more realistic colors, and a 32-bit Z/stencil buffer for incredible 3D effects—blazing the trail for graphics processing units (GPUs) such as GeForce 256 and GeForce2 GTS.
The TNT2 family is the first product line to offer "top-to-bottom" chips to satisfy the needs of every computer and user in the spectrum from basic to high-performance desktop PC computing.
The PC industry has applauded this fourth-generation, 128-bit 3D architecture with more than 400 industry awards.

Review: Butterfly NVIDIA Riva TNT2 Model 64 video card
What gives, in this case, is the NVIDIA Riva TNT2 Model 64 chipset, with a honking 32 megabytes of video memory.
The Model 64 is a cut-down version of the full TNT2; it retains the TNT2's 128 bit data interface, but has only a 64 bit memory interface.
For a recently developed chipset it's cheap, but there are dead cheap original TNT cards all over the place, and a 16Mb TNT or even an 8Mb seems likely to score as well as a Model 64 at a given level of overclocking for OpenGL and beat it by a significant margin for Direct3D.

But we are pretty sure that nVidia Riva TNT2 M64 can haveany real future only if it costs as nVidia Riva TNT (or only a bit more).
TNT2 M64 is also a TNT2, so check the chipset modification beforebuying the card, otherwise you may be greatly disappointed with the purchase.

The TNT2 chip set has no major omissions in its support for cutting edge 3D game standards and is a strong contender in most departments.
Nevertheless, the TNT2 is still a very strong chip set, so it's a safe good-value buy for the short term.

Actually they were just tweked Riva TNTs as the architechture had remained the same: two rendering pipelines with 1 texture module per each, so actually 1 pipeline with 2 TMUs (pipelines combine in the multitexturing mode).
This chip is rather old, it doesn't support all new features such as anisotropy, cubic and relief texturing, etc. It also lacks the real trilinear filtering (it can be enabled for the price of half the perfomance).

The RIVA TNT2, on the other hand, only gained an extra percent of performance with the simpler point sample filtering mode.
