Riven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Riven is also the name of the Age in which the majority of the game takes place.
Riven starts right where Myst left off, in the basement of K'veer in D'ni where Atrus was imprisoned at the end of Myst.
Riven is based on and expands the ultimate past and historical background of Myst, fully described in the two books (the third is Riven's sequel).

Ages of Riven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Named the Fifth Age by Gehn, Riven was probably Gehn’s best age, as far as size, technology, and stability went.
The Link-in point of Riven is on this island, and it contains the Dome that redirects energy to Gehn's Linking Domes, the Star Fissure, and the Beetle Room with prayers to Gehn.
A large device atop his Office, somewhat resembling a dish antenna, was actually used to collect the sparse rain water that fell in the Age and then funnel it to a sink in the small bedroom that sat under his office.

 Riven Review
Riven's complete lack of humor is especially obvious when compared to contemporary releases such as Zork Grand Inquisitor.
Riven's graphics are quite as good as expected, especially when showing animated water effects, but their presentation in a dated slideshow format is a big letdown.
Riven's weather is always the same, monotonous partly-cloudy skies without even the occasional winds that were so enjoyable in Myst.

 Low-Spoiler Guide to Riven
If you are looking for the solution to a particular puzzle, I recommend the UHS site--due to the way their pages are set up you can only see one hint at a time, so you can get the answer to one pesky puzzle without ruining all the others for yourself.
Riven was first released in 1997, but its game engine is little-changed from the original 1993 release of Myst, and it shows its age in its awkward slideshow graphics, rudimentary interface, and cranky refusal to work with Windows XP.
Movement: The movement controls in Riven are very inconsistent and often unintuitive--in some locations clicking on the right edge of the screen will cause you to turn 90 degrees to the right as you'd expect it to, and in others it will cause you to do a complete about-face.

These Riven numbers are discussed in more detail when you arrive at 38 a little later in the solution.

As you explore the surreal realm of Riven and its culture, you quickly learn that this world is not as tranquil as it first appears.
Riven: The Sequel to Myst is a direct continuation of the Myst epic.
Given that much of the sophistication of Riven lies on the richness of its culture, it is ironic that most of the storytelling is done cruelly through the writings in the journals of Atrus, Gehn and Catharine.

 Riven Info
Riven is truly stunning and is even more refined and well developed then Myst.
For those not familiar with Myst and Riven, both titles are an experience in the Tolkienesque D'ni civilization - an ancient and fantastic culture in which physical worlds called Ages can be created by writing their detailed descriptions in specially prepared books.
Riven's story is built upon Myst, with Atrus reappearing to charge the player with the objective of capturing his father, Gehn, and freeing his wife, Catherine, from her prison island somewhere in the Age of Riven.

Riven creates a fantasy world that is alien; yet it evokes a sense of reality that is, in my experience, unparalleled in computer gaming.

That Riven is the sequel to the much acclaimed Myst is enough for many of the fans of the earlier game who have been waiting patiently for it to appear.
Riven, like Myst, is a first-person perspective game where your character is not identified in any way.
Overall, I found Riven to be more engaging and less 'sterile' than Myst and though the puzzles in Riven may have been a little easier I liked the way they were integrated within the game.

 Riven: The Sequel to Myst
The name of the program is Riven, and it is the follow up to the software classic Myst.
The game Myst had a very simple premise: as a player, you are dropped onto an island with no idea how you got there, why you are there, and what you are supposed to do now that you are here.
Do what the instruction manual says to do, which is to "become lost in the beauty of its worlds and think as if you were actually there".

This person (to identify him/her more clearly would be to hint at the secrets of the game) was certainly unreliable; he was arguably nuts; but he was true to his obsession, and clever in finding patterns.
One of the things that Riven forces you to do is consider the nature of obsession, because it is necessary to figure out the logic behind the looniness.

The Riven Journals was designed to provide an insight into Cyan's next masterpiece- not giving away any hints about the story or the outcome at the end of the game, yet still tell information about it.
Once the puzzle was solved, the reward was more information on Riven and, if you were one of the first to solve the puzzle, recognition for being one of the first by having your name added to a book.
A few months after Riven had been released, the Riven Journals were taken, thought to be obsolete now that the actual game had been released.

And now, at last, there's Riven -- and the initial reactions have proclaimed it well worth the wait, with spectacular graphics and puzzles ranging from elementary to devilishly hard, though not a significant technical advance beyond Myst.
But mostly, Riven is a thing of singular beauty -- a beauty that has eluded every other adventure game (with the arguable exception of Myst) simply because game makers have never asked so much of their creations before.
Riven pushes the envelope of what an adventure game can be, not with technical bells and whistles, but with aesthetic ambition.
