Adur Valley Estuary, West Sussex, England
The River Adur Estuary is wide expanse of mud-flats at low water, with the river flow cutting a narrow path, and a tidal inlet at high tide.
The River Adur estuary between the Norfolk bridge and the A27 Flyover sported a particular large number of sea birds as the low spring tide receded exposing the mud flats north of the Railway Viaduct and the mussel beds and gravel to the south.
In the river north of the Toll Bridge, the surface was rippled by shoals of young Sand Smelt, which scattered in many directions and there was a pronounced arrow-like disruption of the water surface, which probably indicated predation by a large fish, most likely to be from shoals of second year Bass.

 Sussex Downs Landscape Assessment
The principal river floodplains are found on the flat valley floor of the valleys of the Arun, the Adur, the Ouse and the Cuckmere rivers.
These wide river floodplains are predominantly used as seasonal pastures for cattle, but there is also some horse grazing and arable fields sometimes occur in areas with gravelly river terrace soils on the edges of the floodplain.
However the floodplains of the River Adur and the Ouse are crossed by major transmission lines and have a more open character which is strongly influenced by the development and industry adjacent to the floodplain.

The river Adur has always been important, for its effect on the landscape of the parish, as a means of communication, and in providing employment.
The chief road through the parish in past centuries was that forming part of the great east-west route through southern England from Canterbury to Southampton, which ran along the crest of the South Downs from the east towards the river Adur.

The Environment Agency are responsible for the majority of the river defences, with the rest the responsibility of the LHB and SPA or private owners.
The failure of either the training wall to the west of the river entrance or the West Pier would have a major adverse impact on the river, in terms of both navigation and upstream flooding, but rather less of an impact on coastal defences and beaches.
The Strategy needs to address both river and coastal processes, and determination of flood defence policy on the tidal river lengths must be integrated with policy on the open coast.

Although the River Adur is generally narrower and shallower than its neighbours the Arun and the Ouse, as far as pike fishing is concerned it ranks as one of the best.
It is also a good idea on big tides or when there is floodwater in the river to fish the bends of the river with your bait positioned on the opposite side to the main flow.
It can often be worth fishing the river at night as the bigger fish tend to feed after dark, especially if there has been a lot of pressure from anglers during the day.

Well, yes, judging by a skim through the available photographs it seems to be a representative of a type common to the south coast rivers Adur, Arun and Ouse, and further research might find similar craft using the Itchen and Southampton Water rivers in the past, so regionally it certainly is an important type.
The Adur barges were never numerous and as there is at least one and some wrecks further down the river our Toll bridge barge cannot be counted too high.
