River Aln - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The River Aln runs through the Alnwick district of the County of Northumberland in England, discharging into the North Sea on the east coast of England.
The river gives its name to the town of Alnwick and to the village of Alnmouth, and its source is in Alnham in the Cheviot hills.
The Aln is a relatively small river but has been important through history as one of the boundaries along which English and Scottish troops marching to war had to cross; for that reason, it was at times heavily defended.

Resting on the estuary of the River Aln, this picturesque coastal village was once the most important medieval seaport between the Tweed and the Tyne.

Lying on the banks of the River Aln it is one of the most striking and imposing castles in England created by generations of Earls and Dukes.

Although a Roman coin has been found close to the River Aln, to the north of the castle the settlement of Alnwick probably did not develop until the Anglo-Saxon period.
The name of the town means ‘settlement by the Aln’ and probably developed at this time, though it is not recorded until about 1160.
It has been suggested that the town grew up at the point where a number of early trackways crossed the river, though no evidence of Anglo-Saxon occupation is known from Alnwick.
