	The Potential for Beneficial Reuse of Coal Fly Ash in Southwest Virginia Mining Environments
		Ash from bituminous coals of the eastern U.S. is generally higher in Fe, K and S, and lower in Mg and Ca, than that from western sub-bituminous and lignitic coals.
		The greatest potential use for fly ash in mining environments is as either a bulk-blended liming agent in acid-forming coal refuse piles or as a surficial soil amendment for rocky and acidic mine soils.
		Application of fly ash as a soil amendment should be limited to a maximum loading rate of 10% or approximately 100 tons per acre, unless specific measures are taken to limit salt and B phytotoxicity such as pre-washing the ash or allowing the ash treated soil to leach before revegetation.

		A large ash cloud from the event was blown to the northwest by strong winds.
		Ash from this event also fell on the western side of the island in the areas of Cork Hill, Old Towne, Olveston, Salem and the Belham Valley.

		This report describes some of the effects caused by ash deposition in rivers east of the volcano, and the effects of massive debris-avalanche and mudflow deposits in rivers draining to the west and south.

		Although Roosevelt Dam was completed in 1911, flooding of the Salt River was still a fairly common experience, and periodic repairs (1916, 1920,and 1925) were necessary to maintain safe conditions on the bridge.
		In 1928 the Arizona Highway Department recommended the construction of a new river crossing and in 1931, when the new structure (HPS-226, Mill Avenue Bridge) was complete, the 1911 bridge was closed to all but pedestrian traffic.
		The Ash Avenue Bridge was demolished in 1991 because it would have cost too much to repair the structural damage that it had suffered.

		Researchers have dated the two White River Ash deposits to two eruptions in the last two millennia - one in approximately 803 A.D. and the other in around 63 A.D — that were thought to come from the same volcano.

		Ohio State University scientists had expected to find a thick layer of volcanic tephra - evidence of a massive historic eruption - near the bottom of core they drilled between Mount Bona and Mount Churchill, both ancient volcanoes, in southeast Alaska’s St.
		“Without a visible ash layer in the core, we don’t believe that Mount Churchill could have been the source for that deposit.” explained Lonnie Thompson, professor of geological sciences and researcher with the Byrd Polar Research Center.
		The researcher’s conviction lies with the analysis of six cores they recovered in 2003 from an ice field in a saddle between the two peaks.
