The River Avon issues from the Fannyside Lochs in the north east corner of North Lanarkshire, some 3 miles (5 km) east of Cumbernauld.
It passes below the Union Canal which is conveyed over the river by the Avon Aqueduct, the largest in Scotland, and then under the Edinburgh-Glasgow railway which is carried by a substantial 23-arch viaduct, immediately to the west of Linlithgow.
The Avon criss-crosses the course of the Roman Antonine Wall.

In part this reflected the need to build a 2,070ft tunnel and a deep cutting near Falkirk because the owner of Callendar House didn't want the canal on his land.
The grandest of the Union Canal aqueducts is the one taking the canal over the River Avon west of Linlithgow.
The answer was an extension to the Union Canal leading to the top of the magnificent Falkirk Wheel, which was opened by the Queen in May 2002, marking the completion of the Millennium Link.

This section between the central Scottish towns of Linlithgow and Falkirk is our second day in the company of the Union Canal, and seven of its nine miles involve a straightforward walk along the canal towpath, keeping to the same contour throughout.
The Avon marks the boundary between West Lothian and the District of Falkirk, and is crossed by the Avon Viaduct - the largest original civil engineering structure on the Union canal.
It's perhaps explained by the fact that Avon is a corruption of the Gaelic word "Abhainn", which itself translates as "river".

At a quarter of the cost of the overall £84.5 million project, the Falkirk Wheel between the two navigations is the most significant structure by far, but only one link in the overall scheme involving rebuilding bridges, clearing blockages and cutting new stretches of canal.

The return journey from the Falkirk Wheel is far easier and it becomes a breeze to finish off the route via the canal towpath back into Linlithgow.
This was in reference to the construction companies who built the canal one of which went bankrupt whilst the other profited from the others misfortune.
A 'day trip' on the Falkirk Wheel can be taken via the British Waterways hire boat which will take you to the top basin into the new tunnel and along the aqueduct and aboard the 'Wheel' for a dramatic excursion down to the lower basin.

Hallglen is a collection of pebbledash houses that sits alone, cut off from Falkirk by Callendar Wood, and the view of it from the canal is incredible, not because of what you see, but because of what you don't see.
These locks disappeared as Falkirk grew and the canals mouldered under piles of rubbish; the Forth and Clyde was opened in 1822, but after 20 years the trains had arrived and the canal was finally closed in 1963.
It's hard to describe, but basically the Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift that carries one boat up at the same time as it carries another boat down.

At Falkirk Sheriff Court on 29 March they admitted causing or knowingly permitting trade effluent to enter the River Avon from a storm sewage overflow at their Polmonthill Pumping Station, near Falkirk in July 2003.
They were fined £10,000 at Selkirk Sheriff Court on 10 May after pleading guilty to a charge of causing or knowingly permitting sewage effluent to be discharged into the Gala Water at Stow in June 2003.
A fine of £2,500 was imposed after they admitted at Inverness Sheriff Court on 24 June to causing screened raw sewage to be discharged the River Enrick at Drumnadrochit in April last year.

This Wallace Cave is a natural geological feature situated on the West Lothian side of the River Avon near the modern "Wallace Bridge" in Muiravonside Country Park.
It is in fact not a cave at all, but an arch formation with two main associated clefts.
According to local lore it was a hiding-place of William Wallace following his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk (1298).
