The Spey is traditionally known for it's Spring Salmon which are deep and firm and fight tenaciously in the fast streams of this challenging river.
It is a swift river that cascades through streams, runs and pools down to Ballindalloch where it joins the Spey.
The water of Avon is as clear as Tanquerey.

The River Avon, Speyside is a river in the Scottish Highlands, and a tributary of the River Spey.
The source of the River Avon (pronounced "Ah-n") is not on Ben Avon but some 10 miles further west on the slopes of Ben MacDui, (Gaelic: Beinn MacDhuibh).
The river then continues east down Glen Avon for another 10 miles before turning north towards the village of Tomintoul and Strath Avon.

I fish the river Avon on Speyside regularly for salmon, seatrout and browns, but know very little about Loch Avon, which is at the source of the river.
I also fish the River Avon, I have been to the loch but I have never fished it.
I actually live in Ireland but have a trip over the Avon in late August, I fish a number of Loughs here which are quite like the Avon, i do well on Bibio's, jungle bunnies, watsons, fl spiders and some of the bumble patterns.

Ford the river near its outlet from the loch and head north to join the path along the loch's northern shore.

This is a fun scenic bit of river that all paddlers should enjoy ideal for groups on their first river trip, or as a start to a longer tour in Scotland, as it gives a bit of everything without being too hard (or wet) and can be paddled at all levels.
From the put in the river strolls down at a leisurely pace to the old railway bridge shortly after this the river bends left and the River Avon (pronounced Arn) joins from the left.
As we pass this rapid the river opens out and drops a couple of metres in the next 500 yards or so it then bends gently left and this is the first major rapid (grade 2).
