Brede is a small village on the A28 midway between Hastings and Tenterden it is usually tied in with Broad Oak Brede, as it is in the parish of Brede.
In 1030 the Manor of Brede was granted to the Abbey of Fecamp in Normandy, and until 1416, Brede was controlled by the Abbey.
Brede was famous for its iron works, and manufactured cannon and shot until the late 1770's, when gunpowder was manufactured.

 Rye Harbour
It is probable that the new estuary of the Rother and Brede, which eventually replaced the port of Winchelsea and followed more or less the present channel (via Rye Harbour), did not become navigable until the end of the fifteenth century.
The first concerns the eastward drift of the shingle across the mouth of the harbour, and the second was the continuous inning or enclosing of the salt marshes along the rivers.
The waters of the Tillingham were to be diverted into the Brede south west of Rye and the waters of the Rother into the Tillingham either by way of St. Mary’s Marshes (north of Rye) or by what is now known as Rock Channel.

The Queen has sent her best wishes to the Brede Steam Engine Society to commemorate the restoration of a 100-year-old steam engine which used to pump 4.5 million litres of water from wells under the river Brede to Hastings every day.
The restored triple expansion steam engine will be the centrepiece of a weekend of celebrations on July 17th and 18th to mark the creation of what was in 1904 a state-of-the-art waterworks housed in a Grade II listed building.
Southern Water is currently carrying out a £4 million upgrading project at Brede water supply works so that the company will be able to continue to meet the area's increasing demand for water.

It is strange when you think that you can now fish any lake, pond, reservoir or gravel pit for coarse fish in what was the closed season, but you cannot fish for trout with a worm in a stream for trout even though that stream may not even contain coarse fish.
On another stretch where the Bull River enters the Cuckmere, we fished for chub, but they were not feeding that day and we had to pack in soon after.

In the other direction, the Canal carries the Brede between deep banks and is not very interesting.
The Brede is thought to have ancient rights of navigation, as it was a tidal river before the lock was built at Rye.
