River City Ransom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
River City Ransom (Japanese: ダウンタウン熱血物語 Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, or "Downtown Hot-Blooded Story") in Japan and Street Gangs in PAL regions) is a video game for the Nintendo Family Computer and the Nintendo Entertainment System from the now defunct Technos Japan Corporation, originally released in 1989.
River City Ransom was directed by Mitsuhiro Yoshida (Super Dodge Ball) and Hiroyuki "Mokeke" Sekimoto (Double Dragon II) and scored by Kazuo Sawa.
River City Ransom EX, the 2004 remake of the game by Atlus on the Game Boy Advance boasted new graphics and a number of new items, techniques, gangs, and other features, but also sacrificed some fan-favorite features from the original version, such as its two-player mode.

River City Ransom was one of the best NES games found on the system that no-one seems to have ever heard of.
River City Ransom EX’s plot is a mirror of the original, in which River City and River City High have been taken over by various bands of gang members.
Combat in River City Ransom EX is very simple and similar to the original at a glance, with the A button performing a punch, the B button performing a kick, and pressing both buttons simultaneously causing the character to leap into the air.

 River City Ransom Review
One thing that makes River City Ransom unique is that the enemies who have taken over the city aren't super-beings or aliens, or even adults for that matter, but a bunch of high school kids who have formed various street gangs.
RCR is full of humor like that (ie, the infamous "Sauna scene"), but it's not really as funny as I had thought it was gonna be.
RCR is different and quirky, and a fun little diversion, but IMO, does not stand up there with the best of the NES classics.

River City Ransom 2 was to be coded by Brandon Leach, a heavily-contracted assembly-level programmer with a geeky love of heavy metal music.
River City Ransom 2 was to employ a very simple addition in subscribing to this theory - the addition of a grabbing move using the "R" shoulder button.
River City Ransom EX, an upgraded port of the original, is slated for release by Atlus on August 5, 2004.

River City Ransom is quite possibly the best platform fighting game of all time (and one of the coolest cooperative games too).
RCR lets you actually interact with the other players (unlike, say Capcom's arcade fighting games), so you can beat the hell out of your partner for his money, use his body for a weapon, or have him jump on your head so you can throw him to higher places.
River City High School Class Reunion is all about the Nekketsu Kouha Kuniokun series, of which RCR is a part!

It was a no-brainer to me, and everyone else who played the original, to pick up River City Ransom EX, the remake Atlus brought to the American market (the original’s publisher, American Technos, has long since gone out of business).
I must answer them all by tipping my hat to Atlus River City Ransom EX is one of the precious few remakes that is better in every way than the original.
However, no discussion of River City Ransom would be complete without discussing the flavor of the game.

River City Ransom EX Hands-On Impressions - Game Boy Advance News at GameSpot
The game's unmistakable visual style, its no-nonsense combat system, its use of RPG-style character building, and its occasionally curious use of the English language are all factors in River City Ransom's latter-day popularity, and fans of the game will be happy to know that it appears to be arriving on the GBA unscathed.
The version of River City Ransom we got our hands on still needed a bit of localization, as most of the system menu options were still in Japanese, but the majority of the game was already in English, and it appears that Atlus hasn't done a whole lot of tinkering with the content.
The only apparent difference between the classic NES version of River City Ransom and the upcoming GBA port was some subtle changes made to the graphics.

GameSpy: River City Ransom EX Review
On the NES, River City Ransom defined the term, "cult classic." At first glance, it looked like a squatty Double Dragon ripoff; but it was actually so much more -- probably one of the best games of the 8-bit era.
For the uninitiated, River City Ransom is a beat-'em-up starring two high school students going after a nasty (and heavily populated) organization of street gangs.
When the NES original was released, I think a lot of the humor of River City Ransom fell on deaf ears.

River City Ransom has always boasted a healthy cult following for its endearingly stumpy character designs, solid brawler action, and strange English-as-a-second-language plot and dialogue (dying enemies often exclaim "BARF!" for no apparent reason and there is even a street gang called the Generic Dudes).
