 Weaver Navigation
This river of ours that flows through Cheshire has been the subject of many a battle over who should control it and what should be done about it’s meandering ways.
Landowners complained that they would suffer from low rents; that to work on the river would mean raising the water levels - putting in locks, which would flood their meadows; and, building bridges would mean boats would not be able to come up river.
Although Northwich came to depend on the river Weaver for most of it’s trade, being in it’s early days, a hive of industry largely thanks to Salt, as that industry declined, so did dependence become a shadow of it’s former self.
