Dory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dory is a small, shallow-draft boat of approximately 5 to 7 m (15 to 22 ft) in length.
Nested stacks of dories were frequently carried on the decks of fishing schooners out to the fishing grounds, where they were then deployed to lay longlines or tend nets.
More glamorously, dories were once used to travel dangerous whitewater rivers, where their superior maneuverability made them preferable over other watercraft available at the time.

Dory boats are agile and swift on the water and have significantly less surface drag than rubber rafts and catarafts.
One of the creators of this dory, Dee Crouch, uses a 20# jackhammer to illustrate the dynamic properties of co-polymer on this boat to demonstrate its flexibility and resilience.
Dories have superior ability to hold gear in a clean rigging fashion, (that is a clean deck, free of obstructions, all gear stowed below deck and rigged down towards the floor), they launch into the river ready to run the river, and they move swiftly on the water.

Dories are small, traditional and charmingly elegant, rigid boats designed to carry four people and a tremendous amount of gear.
The evolution of the dory experience has long been in the hands of the boatmen and cooks, many of whom have been a part of it for over twenty years.
Aside from the incredible places these dory boats will take you; aside from the wonderful experiences you will have there; aside from the dories' heritage and elegance; these boats, more than any other on the river, are just plain fun.

He liked Dory Hargrave, and in a way admired him; Dory was easily expert at many of the sports at which Arthur had had to toil before he was able to make even a passable showing.
Yet Dory persisted in pretending to regard Arthur as in precisely the same position as himself; once he had even carried the pretense to the impertinence of affecting to sympathize with Arthur for being so sorely handicapped.

BUILDING THE FREESTONE DRIFT BOAT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The Western river dory or “drift boat” is a craft that has evolved into a type all its own.
The first drift boats may have had some influence from log-driving bateaux or whaling dories, but they seem to have developed from the minds of a few hard-core fishing guides and outdoorsmen on the rivers of Oregon and Washington in the late 1920’s and early 30’s.
By the late 40’s, the McKenzie River boat and the Rogue River boat had reached a highly specialized design standard by which all drift boats today are judged.
