  ECN Freshwater Site - River Esk
The River Esk rises on the uplands of the North York Moors National Park and is the only major river in the county of Yorkshire that drains directly into the North Sea.
The source of the Esk is upstream of Westerdale, where a series of becks known as the Esklets merge to form the River Esk.
At this point the river is approximately 15m wide, and in normal summer flows the depths vary between 20cm and 30cm.

The river rises and falls very quickly after continuous rain, unfortunately due to excessive logging of the upper reach of this river system, but still is a reliable source of fun in the winter spring months.
The St. Patrick's River trip is approximately 11 Km + 11 Km on the North Esk River to reach the exit point at White Hills.
The North Esk river is about a 20 minutes drive from Launceston heading out through St. Lonards, toward Ben Lomand National Park, which is actually the source of the North Esk.

Fish do not normally take well on a rising river, they may take well during the first few inches of a rising water whilst it is still clear but usually as soon as the water starts to colour they will stop biting and will remain difficult until the river level stablises.
Scottish river levels at the under noted locations of particular interest to anglers are obtained from SEPA, the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and these show show the change in river level over the last two to three days.
An increase in river level is normally associated with rainfall in the catchments, however certain sites are subject to artificial control by, for instance, hydro power stations that may artificially influence the level of the river (see the Glass at Kerrow Wood).

These two rivers offer the highest quality of sport in glorious surroundings for the fly fisherman, from the opening day on 16th February to the close of the season on 31st October.
In the spring and autumn months, when the snow is melting and the rainfall high, the river flows strongly with good water levels and ample room for fishermen to flex their muscles and cast a long line across the pools which, as often as not, hold good numbers of salmon ready to take the fly.

On the down-side, a lot of the redds are in the fields right now, we wont know the extent of the damage to the salmon, brown and sea-trout spawning until the summer.
Also along side that, there is the damage to the invertebrate and plant life, some sections of river have had a real scouring right down to the sandstone bed.
The salmon season began on the 15 Jan; the water was still coming down the river at over three feet and quite coloured.

I believe that, strictly speaking, the Esk should be referred to as the South Esk, because there is the River Esk at Musselburgh.
I assure her that, on the face of the amendments, those who are involved in the Esk fishery feel that the amendments meet their original concerns.

The River Esk is a river in Yorkshire, England that empties into the North Sea at Whitby after a course of around 45km.
The river rises on Westerdale Moor in the North York Moors, flowing through Westerdale before merging with a large number of becks from the surrounding hills, including Tower, Baysdale, Sleddale, Danby, Great Fryup, Stonegate, Glaisdale and Murk becks.
The small towns along the river were at one time of great industrial importance to the north east, with coal mined in the valleys, and iron ore dug from quarries on the surrounding moors.

A river of Angus and Aberdeenshire, the North Esk is formed in the southern Grampians by the meeting of the Water of Mark and the Water of Lee in Angus.
It flows east and south east through Glen Esk, falling down through the Braes of Angus to the valley of Strathmore where it flows onwards to enter the North Sea 4 miles (6 km) north of Montrose.

One of the best salmon and sea trout rivers in the south of Scotland, the river Annan is a spate river flowing southwards for 35 miles past Moffat, Johnstonebridge and Lockerbie before entering the Solway at Annan.
As a result of pollution control, since the early nineteen eighties salmon and sea trout have been returning to the lower river and the stocks of migratory fish are improving year by year.
The most prominent among the 14 angling clubs and associations on the river are the Strathspey Angling Improvement Association (based in Grantown) and the Abernethy Angling Association (based in Boat of Garten), controlling between them some 13 miles of prime fly fishing on the upper middle river.

Whitby harbour is situated at the mouth of the River Esk, with a total area of about 80 acres.
The arms of the entrance piers extend out to sea in a northerly direction leaving the entrance exposed to strong winds from north west through north to north east and sheltered from other directions.
A new high level bridge constructed approximately half a mile up river of the swing bridge was opened in 1980.

The waters on the landward side of the estuary limits of the River Esk which require to be determined in accordance with paragraph (b) of the definition of "the River Esk" in section 111(4) of the 1998 Act are as set out in the Schedule to this Order.
(2) In its application to so much of the River Tweed as is situated outside Scotland, section 7(2) of the 1976 Act (consent to contraventions of section 4(b) or (c) of the 1951 Act) shall be modified by substituting for the reference to "Secretary of State", a reference to "Scottish Ministers".
This Order makes provision in relation to the River Tweed by allowing the Scottish Ministers to exercise functions under Scottish salmon and freshwater fisheries legislation in relation to so much of that River as is situated outside Scotland, with the agreement of, or after consultation with, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The day was hot, the river was full and slow with wonderful reflections, and spring flowers are late this year, I’m glad to say.
The whole view looked dreamy, the slow river the lack of wind, not a ripple on the surface, only disturbed by little insects dropping of the branch of a tree to feed the trout.
The river at this point is deep in a valley, but the sun shone through lighting up certain areas of the bank.

At the river mouth, you can look across the mudflats at low tide and watch wading birds feeding, or listen out for the calls of long-tailed duck and eider during the spring.
Not only are they spectacular to look at, but they also perform a useful task, helping to hold the riverbank together against the scouring effect of the river.
Kingfishers have nested in the western bank of the river along the Grove, and are often seen in winter exploring this part of the river.
