GRADING: The river is constant G 3 with frequent sections of G 4 and G 5, the falls are G 5 and above.
The river looked far too low to paddle on the walk in to the falls, however we did manage to navigate a course through the rocks on the way down without getting out of our boats.
We briefly inspected the river above the seven falls,it didn't look like there was anything worth doing, a couple of small drops but most were portages, and not worth the further carry with the boats.

From Carlisle, the route passed the Carlisle Canal terminus near the Carr's biscuit factory, crossing the River Eden on a viaduct a little to the west of the mainline viaduct.
North of Longtown the line continued sandwiched between the River Esk and the A7, for a further 2 miles, passing Kirkandrews Tower, a 17th century defensive tower, and the Netherby estate of the late Sir John Graham (a staunch supporter of the railway in the 1850s/60s) before crossing the River Esk over the Thistle Viaduct.
The line passed to the LNER in 1923, became nationalised in 1948, and was closed in 1969, apart from the section south of Longtown for goods to the army depot.

This tidal crossing was once part of the Cumbria Coast Road - there were also tidal crossing at the River Mite at Ravenglass and the river Irt at Drigg just north of Ravenglass.
The whole trail blazing ride had to be geared in around low tide - on the day the ford was usuable for several hours with the water only about 8 " deep - the bed of the ford although looking muddy was quite firm underfoot.
