The scarp of the river Esk offers protection along its north and north-western sides, and the eastern side was defended by the Howe Mire, in former times an extensive peat bog.
This camp was discovered from the air in 1975 within the southern defenses of the massive Camp #1, re-using part of the south-west defences of the larger camp.

The River Esk in Musselburgh and the Braidburn in Edinburgh were not at high risk levels, although this could change if the rainfall continues into the night.
