Ettrick, one of the county's older unincorporated villages, is located on the north side of the Appomattox River, across the river from Petersburg and west of the City of Colonial Heights.
By the 1800s, Ettrick was cutting its teeth as a mill town, influenced by ease of access to Petersburg via Campbell's Bridge, which was built across the Appomattox in 1810.

The Ettrick comes from the same source hills as the Border Esk, so if it is runnable then so will the Ettrick be.
Ettrick gorge(2/3): the main rapids of the gorge are below the pool after the manse falls.
If the river level is very high then there is another rapid section further up the valley which becomes paddleable at high levels on a small Ettrick trib (I believe it is called the Tima but don’t quote me on that).

According to the River Tweed Commissioners (RTC), the salmon fishery manager, the fish counter on the Ettrick has recorded a September average of 1,631 fish leaping the cauld during the past five years.
The letter goes on to warn Lighthouse the situation on the Ettrick is critical, and the so-called de-watering of the river is delaying fish access to the spawning grounds.
Mr Yonge says the majority of the stocks in the Ettrick are spring and summer salmon with a peak spawning period in the last week of October and the first week in November.

From here, the river flows under a footbridge into a gorge section which is again grade 2/ 3 - there are lots of small eddies, rock dodging, and a few small play spots.
The trip down from the general’s bridge to the Ettrick is an easy paddle with one grade 2 on it.

A total of 10,300 salmon were landed by rod last year on the Tweed, the best figure for a decade, and the sea trout catch of 1,740 was the biggest since records began more than 50 years ago.
The river's managers said the change was the result of years of work to improve conditions for salmon returning to the Tweed.
John Lovett, chairman of the River Tweed Commissioners, said the result was a 30 per cent increase in the river's productive capacity.
