Lighthouse International - River Blindness (Onchocerciasis)
River blindness is an eye and skin disease caused by a tiny worm called onchocerca volvulus, which is spread by the bite of an infected flfly.
When these worms reach the end of their life cycle and die in the eye, the result is an inflammatory reaction that causes uveitis (inflammation of the uveal tract), vitritis (inflammation of the vitreous), retinitis (inflammation of the retina) and ultimately blindness.
River blindness is commonly treated with an oral medicine called Ivermectin (Mectizan), which is administered with a dose of 150 micrograms per kilogram (maximum 12 mg) every six to 12 months.

River diving, as with all specialty environments, requires equipment tailored for the unique characteristics of the region in which the diver has chosen to work or play.
The line is attached to the float using a locking carabineer between the eye splice of the line and a figure-eight (a rock-climber's device) which is attached to the inner tube.
We believe the swift river environment to be one of the most demanding environments in which divers play and the increased reliability, ruggedness and dependability of commercial suits is the most cost-effective for the frequent diver.

River Blindness, or Onchocerciasis, is the world's second leading cause of blindness.
Aside from being a leading cause of blindness, people suffering from River Blindness experience severe and continuous itching due to the presence of nodules that develop under the skin, causing them to scratch repeatedly.
The larval forms of these parasitic worms are introduced in the human body, as well as transmitted from a sick person to a healthy one, via the bite of infected flflies (Simulium) that live and breed in fast flowing rivers because of their highly oxygenated water.
