The Roman river channel and associated surfaces and features are believed to have been located during the construction of the Telephone Exchange on Hungate during 1951 and 1952 (Richardson 1961; RCHM 1962, 64).
The first was the damming of the River Foss to provide a wet ditch for York Castle which was carried out in the 20 years prior to the Domesday Survey of 1086 and flooded a large area of land which became known as the King’s Fishpool (Stagnum regis).
The course of the early river is overlain by medieval river silts deposited in the King’s Fishpool and material dumped into the Fishpool during the medieval and post-medieval periods.

Head up Hwy 2 on the west side of Stevens Pass, take the No 68 Foss River road, stay straight at the fork to Road No 6830, then at the next fork take Road No 6835 to the left, then continue to the trailhead.
From here drop down staying on the north side of the outlet stream, about 80-100 feet before getting to the West Fork of the Foss River there are two logs you can shimmy across- make sure you find these logs because the trail picks up here on the other side.
The fisherperson's trial is on the west side of the river (always keep the river on your left side).

It doesn't seem to have a formal name, but in his fine book Walk Around the Snickelways of York, Mark W Jones suggests the name "Foss Bridge Reach".
Here on Foss Bridge Reach you can watch ducks and other waterfowl, admire the weeping willow tree and Rowntree Wharf, or, as I did as an angst-ridden adolescent, sit and write a poem about how grim life is.

The river then splits into two channels; one plunges almost 100 feet, the other slides 25 feet into a 50 foot horsetail.
If you lose the trail, work towards the river, and try to climb up any dry streambeds you come across, and you should eventually reach the views of the falls.
