  Stowmarket Official Guide
At the geographical heart of rural Suffolk and on the River Gipping, lies the Town of Stowmarket.
The Town is situated some 12 miles North West of Ipswich and 14 miles South East of Bury St. Edmunds and therefore it occupies a strategic location in the centre of the county of Suffolk on the A14 road from the Midlands and the North to the Euro-Port of Felixstowe.
River traffic inevitably declined after the coming of the railways in 1846 and the Gipping Navigation was closed by an Act of Parliament in 1932.

I began fishing for river carp almost eight years ago, after becoming disillusioned with the schoolboy antics of so-called fellow carp anglers on stillwaters, and have since found it to be one of the most rewarding types of fishing I have ever undertaken.
The larger rivers such as the Thames obviously have a larger biomass, and are able to support greater numbers of large carp, but do not let this put you off fishing the smaller rivers of the country.
These tiny rivers are not to be overlooked by the budding river carper, and will often throw up a surprise or two, to those willing to do their homework.

Baylham House Farm - Rare Breeds Farm Suffolk
Every year, both river banks were scythed where necessary from Ipswich to Stowmarket, a single bank distance of some twelve miles, not because it was a public footpath, for it wasn't in those days, but just because it was accepted as good husbandry and was the commonly practiced countryside conservation of those times.
Walls of stakes and woven branches were often put into the river bed near the banks, either to deflect water and reduce damage from the current or to slow water down and encourage silt deposits in places where such a build up was beneficial.
The River Gipping management policy of the Environment Agency seems to be based on a requirement to provide a large ditch which will take away the worst of the winter flood water.

Ipswich Wildlife Group - The Alderman Canal Project
The original river course continued in a bend past the area where the Civic Centre and Woolsey Theatre now stand (indeed, construction of the present underground car-park was held up by major flooding - not surprising, when one considers this was once a river course!).
The river then flowed on in its culvert past what is now the Guardian Royal Exchange buildings across Woolsey Street, where the rises in the road can still be seen, then on to the back of Jewsons and finally into the Orwell at Stoke Bridge.
In the 1960s the river defences were built and but for the foresight of George Alderson of Gipping Anglian Preservation, this area may have been completely filled in.

One possible explanation might be that these were meeting places for the group in the same way as the later hundreds had their meeting places, and this gave the name to the settlement.
