The BWDB official, who requested anonymity, said initially it was thought that India had released a huge amount of river water through the Farakka barrage.
According to experts, since its construction the barrage has become one of most debated river management projects in the Indian subcontinent and has often acted as an irritant in bilateral ties between Dhaka and New Delhi.
While Bangladesh is of the view that it should have access to stored water collected by India with the help of the barrage, its complaint has often been that in the dry summer seasons, the Indian side unilaterally withdraws the flow of water from the Farakka.

Both the DVC and the Bhakra project in the northern India were reflective of the government's viewpoint that river management projects in India needed to be modelled on Western lines, with its emphasis on large dams.
In actual fact, till the DVC project had been initiated, the problem of Hooghly not getting desilted had never risen because of the nature and timing and force of the floods in the Damodar and Roopnarayan rivers.
This problem is acute in large parts of Bihar as various other river management projects like the Kosh project and the Gandak project also suffer from the same problem of rising level of river beds.
