Its source is probably the gravels of an old buried river, traces of which are observable in Douglas Hill, and in benches on the west side of the valley north of where Shackelford Creek enters it.
These are evidently the old river courses, buried in places 100 feet deep under the rocky debris that had slid from the mountain side during a cataclysm of nature, causing new channels cutting deeper into the rocky formation, to be formed.
Water is obtained from the North Fork of the Salmon River through a ditch carrying 3800 inches, having a length of 4 miles and a 50-foot pressed overflow dam impounds the water at the intake.

Long before the canal era, the River Trent already allowed goods from the coast to reach South Yorkshire (via The River Idle to Bawtry), Lincoln (via the Foss Dyke), Newark and Nottingham (which were on the River Trent) and Derby (via the River Derwent).
This new waterway was to have a junction and basin on the River Trent at West Stockwith.
The River Trent continues to gently meander for just over 4 miles in a north easterly direction till it reaches Gunthorpe where there is a lock about 600 yards east of the A6097 which is the first road to cross the river since Nottingham, 24 miles back.

Retford is a town on the River Idle, in the Nottinghamshire, England district of Bassetlaw.
The town was largely destroyed by a fire in 1528, but prospered after the Great North Road was diverted to run through it in 1766 and the East Coast Main Line and Chesterfield Canal was built to run through Retford.
Retford gained its first charter in 1246, when Henry III granted the right for a fair, this was later extended to holding a Saturday Market by Edward I in 1275.

In the case of idle zones, I would go to the people who are out there day in and day out, patrolling the waterways, enforcing the laws and trying to make our waterways safe and accident free, and ask them what they need to make there job easier, better, and more effective.
This ordinance would make it possible to make the river an idle zone for up to the entire length of the parade for the day (or up to 5 days).
Some of these old River Rats are amazed to see the changes that have occurred in the last 20 years.
