		The River Lune is a river of the United Kingdom, formed at Wath, North Yorkshire, at the confluence of Sandwath Beck and Weasdale Beck.
		The river then passes the remnants of a Roman fort near Low Borrowbridge at the foot of Borrowdale, and flows through south Cumbria (its valley is known as Lonsdale), finally meeting the Irish Sea at Plover Scar near Lancaster, after a total journey of about 44 miles (70 km).

		No agreement for the rest of river, but due to intelligent and appropriate behaviour by paddlers, there does not seem to be a problem with small groups going about their business quietly.
		At water levels where you regularly scrape the bottom of your boat on the gravel beds all the way from Beck Foot bridge the Strid became a blind left hand bend followed by a large rock in the middle of the stream which was virtually impassable.

	Gulls at the Tip
		Much easier to study are the gulls which gather on the adjacent tidal section of the River Lune at low tide to bathe in the river and loaf on the nearby mud.
		Firstly, it is evident that birds from all three colonies occur on the River Lune.

		The plan was to get on the river below Tebay next to the M6 and the weather was improving as we came down the Pennines on the west side.
		There are three pages to the access agreement for this river with very specific instructions about when to paddle, places not to park or change etc., so it was a pleasant surprise to find a local resident having a friendly chat with Clive and Richard on the ancient art of hedge laying.

		A group of Lancaster business men saw the growth in importance of Liverpool to the south and in an attempt to maintain their trade employed the renowned engineer John Rennie to survey a route for a canal from Wigan in the south to Kendal in the north, via the towns of Preston and Lancaster.
		On the north side of the river another series of locks would lift the canal out of the river valley into the town and then on northwards through Lancaster to Kendal.
		Because of the increase in the estimated costs of the aqueduct over the Ribble (thought to be in the region of £95,000), and the arrival of the railways, it was never built and the the temporary tramway became permanent.
