The River Lune is a river of the United Kingdom, formed at Wath, North Yorkshire, at the confluence of Sandwath Beck and Weasdale Beck.
The river then passes the remnants of a Roman fort near Low Borrowbridge at the foot of Borrowdale, and flows through south Cumbria (its valley is known as Lonsdale), finally meeting the Irish Sea at Plover Scar near Lancaster, after a total journey of about 44 miles (70 km).

The Solani river is crossed by an aqueduct 920 feet long, having side walls 8 feet thick and 12 deep, the depth of the water being 10 feet.
That of the River Solani flows under fifteen arches, having a span of 50 feet each, constructed in the most substantial manner, and springing from piers resting on blocks of masonry sunk into the bed of the river.
Where they cross the river Endrick at the bottom of the valley, the pipes are 1 5/8 inches thick, and have to sustain a pressure of 235 feet.

So sensitive is its plant's setting by the side of the salmon rich River Lune that Acordis Cellulosic Polymers has invested £0.5 million in a scheme to protect the river from even the slightest eventuality of accidental contamination.
Acordis uses the other eight million gallons for cooling purposes, which is returned to the Lune after it is used, a little warmer but otherwise unchanged, via four separate streams into a beck which feeds the river.
This has two further benefits ­ it ensures that the river water is of sufficient purity for the plastic process and it provides the EA with information on the Œhealth' of the river upstream of Acordis.

Andy Clifford is River Advisor for the Lune from Tebay to Kirkby Lonsdale (Sept 2004)...'The agreement for Rigmaden Bridge to Kirkby Lonsdale is working well.
No agreement for the rest of river, but due to intelligent and appropriate behaviour by paddlers, there does not seem to be a problem with small groups going about their business quietly.
At water levels where you regularly scrape the bottom of your boat on the gravel beds all the way from Beck Foot bridge the Strid became a blind left hand bend followed by a large rock in the middle of the stream which was virtually impassable.

 Gulls at the Tip
Much easier to study are the gulls which gather on the adjacent tidal section of the River Lune at low tide to bathe in the river and loaf on the nearby mud.
Firstly, it is evident that birds from all three colonies occur on the River Lune.
After standing in the river for about 10 minutes the bird finally wandered out onto the mud and I was amazed to see a large white ring with the code 161C on its right leg and a metal ring on its left leg.

The River Lune Millennium Park stretches some 15 kilometres along the banks of the Lune from Bull Beck near Caton to Salt Ayre in Lancaster.
A vast array of wildlife and birds can be seen in the park from gulls, ducks and waders at Salt Ayre where the river is tidal, to fishing birds such as cormorants and kingfishers further upstream.
The Environment Agency is trying to encourage fish to spawn here to reverse the decline of fish populations Dragonflies can be seen skimming the water and in the evening, bats are on the wing hunting for insects.

The plan was to get on the river below Tebay next to the M6 and the weather was improving as we came down the Pennines on the west side.
There are three pages to the access agreement for this river with very specific instructions about when to paddle, places not to park or change etc., so it was a pleasant surprise to find a local resident having a friendly chat with Clive and Richard on the ancient art of hedge laying.
It was a bit chilly but once in our boats the joy of a river with good water level (yes really!) and the lakeland scenery took over.

A group of Lancaster business men saw the growth in importance of Liverpool to the south and in an attempt to maintain their trade employed the renowned engineer John Rennie to survey a route for a canal from Wigan in the south to Kendal in the north, via the towns of Preston and Lancaster.
On the north side of the river another series of locks would lift the canal out of the river valley into the town and then on northwards through Lancaster to Kendal.
Because of the increase in the estimated costs of the aqueduct over the Ribble (thought to be in the region of £95,000), and the arrival of the railways, it was never built and the the temporary tramway became permanent.

Members of the student boat club were taken to hospital on Tuesday morning (19/2/02) after the Womens' VIII rowing boat capsized during training on the River Lune.
The eight women and one male cox were carried over the weir near Skerton and the boat broke up.
The students were treated in the RLI for cuts and bruises, but were released later that morning.
