The River Lynher is 34km long, rising at a height of 280m on Bodmin Moor and flowing into the Tamar Estuary at Plymouth.
The River Lynher is "a hard working river"; historical mining activities (particularly in the headwaters) have led to the contamination of watercourses to varying degrees by metalliferous compounds such as zinc and copper.
A river walk was held on the main River Lynher at Callington Newbridge in the summer 2003.

The River Lynher rises on the eastern side of Bodmin Moor and is fed by moorland streams and small tributaries.
The Lynher Valley is a part of the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the Cornwall AONB consists of twelve separate areas; these are ten stretches of coastline including much of the northern most coastal area, Bodmin Moor and the Camel Estuary.
The village of North Hill is nestled around the parish church; a footbridge crosses the River Lynher and climbs to the edge of Bodmin Moor and Kilmar Tor, the third highest tor in Cornwall.

The Lynher is a small river which is only just classifiable as a grade two water; at low water canoeing is difficult but at high flows the water speed combined with the problems of trees, undercut banks and other obstructions can cause real difficulties.
Care must be taken to avoid barbed wire which is sometimes strung across the river to prevent livestock from wandering.
As the riverbank is mainly lined with trees the river should be avoided during high floods due to problems of avoiding low branches, the lack of breakouts and possibility of trees brought down by floods.

Occupying the hole is an ancient motar stone thought to have been used for crushing tin ore prior to smelting.
The disturbed ground at this point are the remnants of medieval tin streaming when the ore was extracted from deposits laid down in the bed of the river.

Lynher Farm is a family run beef and sheep farm which borders the river Lynher.
Lynher Farm dates back to 1854, built of granite and stone, the house has an imposing entrance, surrounded by a wisteria tree which in full blossom is a photographers delight.
The bedrooms, all with large windows overlooking the garden and fields are individually decorated to a high standard, with comfortable well sprung beds which provide a superb nights sleep.

I am not one for river trips really, but the better half recently persuaded me to accompany her on such a trip.
I have even been on a private boat up the river Lynher, which, in my considered opinion is probably one of the loveliest stretches of river in the UK.
My only complaint about the river trip was the captain’s commentary – It was delivered almost word for word in both forward and reverse directions.

Anyone walking at low tide along the banks of the tidal Tamar, or it`s sister river Lynher, will have stumbled across the remains of old quays, decaying and overgrown......a silent testament to man`s previous efforts in this area.
If the walker had stopped looking ahead at the lovely view and looked at his or her feet, it is strongly possible that many fragments of smashed pottery and glass would have been spotted lying half buried in the mud near these quays.
River transport was the fastest form in the Tamar area, with poor roads...indeed in some areas it may still be the case.

Our exit point from the river was at Clapper Bridge and although I was tired I would have liked to have gone on further.
Neil informed us it was a 'good fun' trip with maybe the odd tree in the water to negotiate, so we were looking forward to a gentle paddle with a bit of a difference.
The coaches estimate was that this part of the river could be completed in 40 minutes but it might take us a little longer with a stop for lunch.

 Tidal Lynher - Anglers' Net
At the bottom of my road I've got Forder creek that feeds into the River Lynher and so into the Tamar (all are tidal obviously!!).
I recently drove past a part of the creek and noticed a fish striking at a shed load of whitebait and wouldn't mind having a crack at whatever it was (I'm assuming it was Bass).
I've never fished either of the rivers you mention, but they both hold game fish, and one assumes that the river is therefore fairly clean, especially in the tidal areas.

This Lynher seal is one of only a handful of Common Seals reported in Cornwall since sightings records began.

Officers from the Plymouth Port Health Authority have tested a variety of samples from water in the River Lynher in south east Cornwall.
It is produced by tiny phyto-plankton, but it can accumulate in the tissues of the mussels, oysters and cockles.
Two weeks ago, the poison was discovered at Shillingham Point, near the mouth of the River Lynher.
