The River Meon is a river in Hampshire in southern England, which flows generally southwards from the South Downs to the Solent.
The River Meon rises approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) south of the village of East Meon.
Until late in the 16th century, the River Meon was navigable as far as Titchfield, which at that time was a significant port.

The River Meon is a good river for study because it is relatively small, running only 21miles from its source south of the village of East Meon to its mouth at Hill Head.
During the 16th century, the village of Titchfield was a bustling port, linked to the sea by the River Meon.
The damming of the River Meon changed the landscape of the valley for ever but without the sluice gates, the habitats of the nature reserve could never have been created.

It runs due north initially to East Meon and in wet weather it becomes a force to be reckoned with, liable to flood up the roads.
In ajoining Corhampton, the river rushes under the road by the old water mill as the chaming old tower of Church looks on.
River water does not loose its strength when it drives a mill, its energy can be used time and time aagain.

Named after the river meon,this delightful village in the meon valley boasts a glorious cruciform church, as fine as any church in Hampshire.
Izaac Newton,the physicist and mathematician, and who was a professor at Cambridge University,spent many hours fishing in the local river.
East Meon is within 5/6 miles to the west of Petersfield.

A project undertaken over the past year by the Meon Valley parishes is about to come into fruition with the opening of a recommended footpath/bridleway following the 30 mile length of the river Meon from the estuary at Titchfield Haven upstream to the source at East Meon.
The project commemorates the arrival during the 7th century AD of St Wilfrid and his progression up the Meon, as he converted the heathen Meonwara tribe.
A historical book (£3.00) gives information about the area and details of the churches, and a walking guide (£2.00) lays out the walk in easy sections (parts of the route follow bridleways and are suitable for horse-riders and cyclists).

The Allotments are located by the south bank of the River Meon by the footpath to Frogmore.
It is fortunate for East Meon that the Parish Council does own enough land to provide 22 Allotments.
There is a waiting list and the Parish Council reviews the Agreements each year, re-allocating any plot whose owner has not, for whatever reason, renewed his or her Agreement.

Through the centre of the village runs the River Meon, with flint buildings on either side.
The church, at the base of the hill, is one of the finest Norman churches in Hampshire.

The Saxon settlement is thought to have been to the east of the Meon and would have consisted of wooden houses with a brush roof, there may have been a church and manor house too but no remains have been found.
The increasing population of skilled craftsmen and merchants had sufficient wealth to build themselves substantial houses and the new developments took place away from the old houses and the church on the west bank of the Meon.
Mention should be made of Wickham's most illustrious 'son' - although not born in Wickham his father, John Long, moved there with his young family and it was then that the Lord of the Manor, John de Scures, noticed the clever boy and sent him to Winchester to be educated.

The Meon, is the most easterly of the Hampshire chalk streams, rising at East Meon and reaching the sea in the Solent 15 miles to the south.
It is very varied river, which reflects the patchwork nature of the farmland.
This is one of the very best beats on the Meon.

A tribe called the Meon settled in the Meon Valley and they founded the settlement at Titchfield.
Its inhabitants lived by farming and on the River Meon was a mill which ground grain to flour for the villagers.
Furthermore Titchfield was a busy little port as the river was navigable in those days.

My inspiration for the name ‘Meoncounselling’ came from the River Meon, a peaceful river that flows near to my home.
The River Meon generally flows freely, and on its journey to the Solent overcomes many obstacles without too many problems.
If we look at our lives like the river, we can sometimes become impacted by life’s flotsam and jetsam, which build up and disturb the flow in our daily routines, and maybe spill over when things become too difficult to cope with.

Once an important port on the south coast, the village of Titchfield has a large number of well preserved historic buildings set around the ancient church of St Peters.
Footpaths lead from the village and follow the river Meon 2 miles to the coast.
Here there is a nature reserve and year-round visitor centre with café, a picturesque boat haven, a shingle beach - popular with sea anglers, and headland with several miles of bridle and footpaths.

The trackbed survives in a good state for the 11 miles from Knowle Junction to West Meon though the stretch between Wickham and Knowle Junction is currently a dead-end bridleway.
